What's so happy about them? Spending money one would better spend elsewhere? Gorging oneself on rich foods and growing fatter? Spoiled brats demanding gifts? Families arguing over ancient disputes? One should receive the Order of Merlin merely for surviving them with one's sanity intact.
Yet having a bountious table surrounded by family and children is something that is envied by those who lack them. For them, this is a season of want and darkness indeed.
I wish you a happy holiday season, sir, by whatever measure you count happiness.
That table you refer to, as often as not, seats Aunt Helvag who insists on recounting over dinner her battle with the doctors over the pustules forming on her arse, Uncle Merton who is facing redundancy for his own errors yet chooses to tell us all loudly how he is the only one who does any work, and Cousins Osinio and Lyrod who haven't been on speaking terms for so long neither of them can recall what caused the initial dispute. The 'adorable' children are happily changing salt for sugar, destroying priceless family heirlooms, and getting sick from all the sweets and indulgence.
Envy is the last sentiment I feel at such a time. As noted below, solitude is the measure by which I count happiness.
I was kind of hoping you died. Oh well. Can't have everything I guess. Since I feel so sorry for you, I got you a Christmas present. Care to take a guess what it is?

For many people, not very much.

It's a book, "What's Wrong With My Snake? A User-Friendly Home Medical Reference Manual" by John Rossi and Roxanne Rossi.
