Why cats?

I've been considering the case of Schrödinger's cat, which he proved could be both alive and dead at the same time, until one opened its box to check. If you haven't any idea what this is about, I refer you to the wikipedia on it here ( Read more... )

Step one - cut a hole in the box.

If one can see into the box, then one observes if the cat is alive or dead. The cat is only both alive and dead while it cannot be observed.

Bad logic. Amusing icon.

However, the principle does not apply to pixies, it would seem.

Your state remains constant regardless of my efforts not to observe you.

(Thank you for the link to the comic. I should have liked to have seen his take on the double slit experiment. The error inherent in the joke, of course, is that it isn't the existence of the cat/beer that is in question, but their state. This requires further study, naturally, for which my 'fridge' is adequately stocked.)

This so called colonist is curious - the scalability of the paradox presented leads me to wonder if the cat would know whether to open the box for you? Or if it would indeed know how to interpret the results if it did.
