[CHARACTER INFO]
CHARACTER NAME: Agatha Heterodyne/The Maker
FANDOM: Girl Genius
CHRONOLOGY: Taken just after this.

BACKGROUND/PERSONAL HISTORY/ETC:

THE SPARK: To properly explain Agatha's history, one must first understand what a Spark is. [Recommended reading here, as it explains it far better than I can paraphrase.]

The Spark, meaning the "spark of a genius," is a rare, hereditary mental attribute without which the mad scientists of the world of Girl Genius would be nothing. It's what makes them who and what they are, people who seem to be able to futz with the laws of physics and nature as we know them. To truly warp the laws takes about two hours, but the results of such things can vary in horror factor.

The major emphasis for a spark is on the mad of mad scientist. A Spark will go into 'the madness place' which can also be called hyperfocus, characterized by intense (and I do mean intense) concentration on the problem at hand, dramatically increased comprehension, intuition, megalomania, and increased increased aggression, often at the expense of rationality and self-preservation. This state of madness is the reason why sparks are called madboys and madgirls, though never to their faces, as it is dangerous to one's health. A Spark is intensely charismatic, especially while in the madness place, and tends to inspire loyalty, aka acquire minions, through sheer force of charisma and will. ***Agatha will not have access to this charisma. 95% of the people in her world are followers, and are thus prone to it. People in the City are not.***

Though tools and materials are required, very little is out of a Spark's capabilities if they want it enough. Agatha has built many things while sleeping when worried about a particular problem, and didn't even know what they were for until they were turned on later. Pretty much all of the 'mad scientist' stereotypes can be applied to Sparks. Many things they build outstrip even modern science, but when one takes into consideration the lack of rationality in the madness place, this can add up to a devastating outcome.

When the Spark first manifests in a person, usually in the teenage years, it's called a breakthrough, and is the most traumatic and dangerous time for any budding Spark. They often get themselves killed by their own creations or by angry towns.

Sparks tend to have characteristic styles, which are also hereditary. Agatha hasn't shown much in the way of a style preference yet; she's fantastic at building clanks and death rays, but not so good at the medical sparkyness yet. Yet. With her background it's likely that she'll excel at any Sparky field she tries her hand at.

Many of the machines Sparks build are known as clanks. Clanks have a range of AI - Agatha’s Dingbots are completely autonymous and able to perform complex tasks on their own, but some clanks merely follow orders. Sparks can also build people, known as Constructs.

THE WORLD:Girl Genius is set in an alternate Earth. Steampunk/Gaslight Fantasy. The story revolves around Europa, but there are mentions of America at times. In this world, Sparks and armies dominate everything. Many of our countries exist there - England, France, and Germany, for starters - but there are others also. Most of Europa (Europe) is held by Baron Klaus Wulfenbach, who is a powerful Spark and former companion to the Heterodyne Brothers. His son Gilgamesh is also a very strong Spark.

HETERODYNES: The Heterodynes are one of the main lineages of Sparks. They established the fortress city of Mechanicsburg and terrorized the surrounding countrysides. Castle Heterodyne, a sentient castle that is as likely to kill you as let you walk through it, is one of their greatest inventions. The Jagermonsters are the other. The family has existed for hundreds of years. They exemplify the best and worst of the Spark stereotypes.

When Bill and Barry Heterodyne came along, all that changed. They renounced the ways of their ancestors and worked for Good, becoming legendary heroes about whom hundreds of stories and plays have been written. They fought for peace around Europa, then disappeared in the war against The Other, until the night the Castle was attacked and its mind fragmented into multiple personalities and Lucrezia disappeared. After that, the lineage was considered extinct and the Baron took over. Little did the world know that Agatha even existed and that she was being taken care of by her uncle Barry and the constructs (created life) Punch and Judy, AKA Adam and Lilith Clay.

AGATHA: Agatha is the daughter of Bill Heterodyne and Lucrezia Mongfish, the Villain's Beautiful Daughter and evil Spark who turned a new leaf and married Bill.

At the tender age of five, Agatha broke through - she demonstrated the (in)famouse Heterodyning hum to her uncle Barry (yes, Barry Heterodyne). He built her a locket, in the crest of the Heterodynes (a golden trilobite), which kept her from entering the madness place/hyperfocus with debilitating migraines. Her uncle then disappeared and has been missing since, leaving her to be raised by Adam and Lilith Clay/Punch and Judy.

Agatha, known as Agatha Clay, at the age of 18, was a student at the University in Beetlesburg, and also a lab assistant for Dr. Beetle and his scientists. Despite her lineage (which she didn't know about), the locked ensured that Agatah would never be able to properly complete a clank or concentrate too hard on anything, which gained her a reputation for being pretty, but stupid. She believed herself to be stupid also.

On her way to the school one morning, there was an electrical disturbance and then her locket was stolen, which caused her Spark to start showing more and more throughout the day. At the same time, Baron Wulfenbach decided to visit with his son. There were some troubles, namely that Dr. Beetle had been hiding a Hive Engine, a machine of The Other. In the ensuing chaos, Dr. Beetle was killed by his own bomb, which he'd thrown at Agatha and Gilgamesh. She was escorted home and later built her first clank, the Search Engine, whose purpose was to find her uncle Barry and bring him back home. After the Engine was destroyed she was brought to Castle Wulfenbach, a giant airship/blimp that the Baron had built to replace the family home.

On the Castle she made friends with the Baron's insurance policies - the children of major families and kingdoms he had under his command. Even moreso, she fell mostly in love with Gilgamesh, and the feeling was mutual. She also discovered that she's a Spark with him, and finally started gaining some sort of confidence in herself. One of the teens in the Baron's care was actually her cousin, something that delighted her, as she'd never had any family aside from her uncle and "parents." While on the Castle she also met Othar Tryggvassen (Gentleman Adventurer), who would be a thorn in her side while demonstrating a Spark's remarkable resilience (he falls from very high places quite often and is always assumed to have survived it).

When the hive engine recovered from Beetleburg was activated on Castle Wulfenbach, Agatha (who has become Gil's lab assistant) and Gil ended up fighting their way through hoards of slaver wasps, with the help of a pair of electric foils she whipped up and her Dingbots. After they managed to destroy the engine, Agatha kissed Gil in her excitement, and he made the worst marriage proposal ever. She refused him, but has been growing more than a little fond of him, and their talk was interrupted by Othar (damn him eyes). Adam and Lilith showed up to help her escape, but were discovered by the Baron and his construct, Von Pinn. Adam and Lilith got Agatha to safety with her friends, but were both killed by Von Pinn. Lilith's last words to Agatha were to get to Mechanicsburg and Castle Heterodyne. It was at this point that Agatha learned that she was really Agatha Heterodyne, daughter of Bill. She escaped with the talking cat construct Krosp and Othar, whom she later pushed out of the little airship.

After successfully escaping and ditching Othar, Agatha and Krosp crash-landed in an area known as the Wastelands, then meet up with a traveling Heterodyne show. She keeps herself under cover, so to speak, and ends up travelling with them as Agatha Clay. She became very good friends with Zeetha, a Skifandrian princess who also became her fighting teacher. In one city, she rescues/releases a trio of wild Jagermonsters who then join up with the group and protect her. While travelling, she becomes more and more confidence with her skills and her heritage, instinctively throwing herself into dangerous situations to hero it up.

When the show passes through a city named Sturmhalten, they are requested to do a command performance at Castle Sturmvoraus. Agatha plays Lucrezia in the play "The Socket Wrench of Prague" and is later taken prisoner by Aaronev Wilhelm Stormvarous, who believes her to be the heir to The Other (Lucrezia) whom he had previously served. Aaronev is murdered by Anevka, who is then betrayed by her brother Tarvek, who is also a Spark and possibly a secondary love interest for Agatha. It's a string of multiple betrayals, but during that time, Agatha was possessed by the spirit of her mother Lucrezia/The Other, having been shoved into Aaronev's special machine by the Geisterdamen. For awhile, Lucrezia and Agatha traded off sharing the body - whenever Lucrezia fell asleep, Agatha woke up. It is all very confusing, but they kept switching.

Her friends from the travelling show returned to rescue her with the help of some hallucinogenic gas, making the general populace of Sturmhalten believe that the Heterodynes were back. After returning to their camp (with Lucrezia coming back into control), they were attacked by the Baron. Lucrezia managed to infect him with a slaver wasp, but was thwarted when she puts Agatha's locket back on. It's broken, but allowed Agatha to regain control of her body. The Baron then killed Lars, who’d become close to Agatha as the show travelled. Heart breaking, Agatha screamed “Ni Tok!” to seemingly nobody. Until, that is, all of the circus wagons transformed into war clanks and attacked the Baron’s troops. Agatha controlled her clanks via the silverodeon until she nearly killed the Baron and was forced to flee to Mechanicsburg.

She entered Mechanicsburg quietly and under cover, only to find out that an imposter was trying to take her place. The imposter, Zola, was a plant put together by Tarvek (the Storm King) and a group called the Knights of Jove, who wanted to take control of Mechanicsburg by completely destroying the Castle’s consciousness. Anyone who could keep a legitimate claim on the city would be able to then start taking over Europa as a Heterodyne. This obviously pissed Agatha right the fuck off. She contacted the former Seneschal of the castle, Carson von Mekkhan and was introduced to coffee by his grandson Vanamonde.

It’s at this point that Agatha discovered coffee. Coffee is fantastic and amazing and makes her want to build. She spent several hours truly warping the laws of nature and building the most perfect coffee engine which brews the most perfect coffee. Literally perfect. She later had to make some changes to the new and improved coffee engine so that it wouldn’t break people anymore. How frustrating! Science demands perfection! Lesson learned: Don’t give Agatha coffee.

Fun coffee time aside, it was time to get into the castle. Von Mekkhan took Agatha into the catacombs to speak with the Castle directly. It couldn’t confirm her as a Heterodyne there, but requested her help nonetheless, since it knew it was broken and that people were trying to destroy it entirely. Afterwards, the group witnessed Gil destroy an entire army’s worth of giant battle clanks outside the city, then Agatha made for the Castle.

She was snuck inside the way convicts were sent in - as a prisoner, under the radar. There she discovered Moloch von Zinzer, who’d been the reason she was taken to Castle Wulfenbach in the first place (they assumed she was his lover, and figured that she’d be a good bargaining chip against him). Von Zinzer helped Agatha get to the castle’s library, where she was taken to the Chapel of Bones, where Agatha was finally confirmed once and for all as the Heterodyne heir. The Castle then started helping her and von Zinzer to rescue both Tarvek and Gil, who’d entered the place at different times, both wanting to help her.

She’d just stumbled on Zola and Gil together in the castle when one of her old professors (who’d been sent to the Castle because of her having been the Heterodyne heir) attacked. Gil was shot and Agatha nearly so, and then the professor (and his clank), was smashed by the Castle.

It’s at this point, just after Agatha was reuinited with Gil (who she is in love with) and having been validated as the Heterodyne, that she was ‘ported. She will not be happy.

PERSONALITY:Agatha is quite the mad genius, but she is very good at heart. She’s a sweet girl and tends to be kind to everyone, though she will make exceptions for certain people (Zola and Klaus for some examples). She has a pretty wicked sense of humor, is loyal to her friends, and will throw herself into danger to help people. Even under cover she couldn’t help but try to help people, marking herself as a definite hero as opposed to the usual breed of Heterodyne. She’s absolutely brilliant and a very powerful Spark. Partly due to her Sparkiness and partly due to her own personality, Agatha tends to gather friends very easily. People are drawn to her - it’s just part of being a Heterodyne.

While very kind, Agatha has no problem getting ruthless and violent if she has to, though she prefers to avoid it and does not kill. If threatened she will not take it nicely. Interrupting her in hyperfocus is also a dangerous idea.

When in the madness place, she will type in SMALLER SIZED BOLDED COMIC SANS MS IN CAPS.

CLASS: Mad Scientist, but a Hero.
SUPERHERO NAME: The Maker
ALTER EGO: Agatha Heterodyne. She will likely open the best damn coffeeshop in town.
POWER: POWERS HAVE BEEN UPDATED. Agatha is a Spark (technopath-ish) of a decidedly odd bent. Please see the Spark section above for further clarification. She can build nearly anything, fix nearly anything mechanical, fix people (though her medical knowlege is currently a little lacking - this will improve), probably create life (i.e. Constructs, something her family is known to be good at), and all the machines (clanks) she creates obey her. She’s also very good at building guns/death rays. As a Spark, she can go into a state of mind called hyperfocus (the madness place) in which she does most of her work. She has increased charisma, stamina, and strength when angry or in the madness place (though she still has very good stamina/strength outside of hyperfocus). She'll likely pick up some NPC minions and possibly a character or two who want to follow her due to the Spark tendency to acquire followers and inspire loyalty. Additionally, she uses something referred to as "heterodyning" in the form of a strange sort of music (often humming), to help her concentrate and control her clanks. She can speak to and hold conversations with her own clanks, most of which have some form of AI. Though she does require tools to work, the tools can be very minimal yet produce results. She builds clanks in her sleep often, especially when she’s under stress or worried about something.

EQUIPMENT: Agatha will be carrying some tools, Dingbot Prime, and half of a death ray. The gun part, but not the power (see the two parts here). She'll be dressed like this.

Dingbot Prime is sort of an NPC in itself. It can perform complex tasks on its own, and is somewhat self-replicating. Each generation is less well-made, but still able to perform pretty amazing feats of engineering. She will likely tell it not to replicate too much, as she will want to lay low a bit. At first.

COMMUNITY POST SAMPLE: This city is very interesting, I think!

All of these clanks, all over the place! I can’t wait to get my hands on one of the “cars” to see how they work.

While I would very much prefer to be back home taking back my city and fixing the Castle, I can see that I’ll be learning a lot in this place! It’s always best to increase your knowlege where you can, isn’t it? And for SCIENCE! Ah, but I digress.

I find myself having a severe lack of tools. I’m not even sure if the ones I need exist in this world. Would someone please point me to where I can buy good tools or have them made?

THIRD PERSON: Agatha frowned at the very small range of tools she’d set out across her bed in the MAC. This wouldn’t do it all. Dingbot Prime had been acquiring more for her, but they still weren’t enough. Weren’t complex enough, weren’t good enough. She would have to manage until better tools could be found, so she could build her own transporter and get back home. It had been done before, and could be done again. She had a Castle to hold and a Gil to romance.

“Well, I could build it, but how to POWER IT, I WONDER? MAYBE IF I-” She looked down as Dingbot Prime tugged on her sleeve, making a concerned sort of clicking noise.

“No, I suppose you’re right. If only I had Gil’s generator. Then it would work.”

She frowned again at the selection of screwdrivers and wrenches laid out before her, and sighed.

“This will have to do.”

After tugging her gloves on, she picked up a screwdriver, then turned to the half-finished dingbots on the makeshift work table she’d set up. Time to make some minions.
