“I hate the way you smell.”

“Ditto.”

Alice purses her lips together and folds her legs neatly. This is for Bella, this is for Bella.

“Pass the popcorn,” Jacob barks, almost like an impatient child. Alice scolds him with a chipper smile.

“I paid for it,” she gleams, nursing the box of puffed corn. It’s something she’s never tasted and never will, yet the whole process of it fascinates her. “Who says I don’t want it?”

“Oh, cut me a break,” he sighs.

“What does it… taste like?” she says, narrowing her eyes at the small flecks of yellow and white. Suddenly the magic in her eyes has dulled, and somehow the air around them has grown heavier. Each knows, Jacob especially, that a quick jibe at the other won’t be taken lightheartedly.

“I don’t know…” Jacob brushes on, folding his arms. “Salty.”

“And what does salt taste like?’

Her wide eyes search the box for an answer. Jacob wishes it could answer so he didn’t have to.

“Look, Alice,” he unfolds his arms, a nervous habit that Alice has picked up on. “Bella told me you know nothing of your life before…you know… so I’m kind of confused about what to compare it to. Think of someone with a high salt diet and you’re close.”

Alice bursts out laughing, causing a few stares from people getting settled in their seats.

“You amuse me,” she allows, a small smile lighting her face.

“Yeah, well…” Jacob says awkwardly, doing that thing with his arms again. “Give me the popcorn.”

Their hands brush gently in the swap.

His warmth replaces her loss of warmth; her coolness brings him back down to earth.
