He was there to pick her up and dust of her knees when she fell.

“Oomph,” Lucy huffed, mouthful of dirt and her best skirt stained. Up ahead, Edmund and Susan were running to the shore, stripping off clothes and diving beneath the waves. A pair of hands locked beneath her arms and got her on her feet.

“Careful, Lu,” Peter said, a warm smile touching his face.

The water was warm that day.

He was there to free her, when she was trapped and afraid.

“Lucy,” sighed Peter, unlocking the door. The broom cupboard beneath the stairs had been her prison for going on two hours now and the spiders in the corner were not willing to make friends. Lucy still remembered the sound of Edmund’s laugh as he turned the key on the other side, his footfalls heavy as he sped from the scene of the crime.

“Peter,” she sobbed, rushing him into a hug. He picked her up and cradled her against his chest. The kind of hug that made you close your eyes, because you knew you could be vulnerable here.

He had been there in Narnia, to guide and assure her.

“I don’t want to go without you,” she confides, her eyes bright and her defiance strong.

“It’s your imagination, Lu, your love, that kept us there so long,” Peter tells her. His smile is melancholy, one yearning for the magic but one with too much pride to beg. He drags a thumb over her cheek swiftly. “Make sure you bring me back something. And don’t be gone too long.”

She leaves Peter’s study, her bag packed for another adventure, this time leaving him behind.
