I wonder if people who get into a particular subculture which to the mainstream seems particularly alien are generally predisposed to identifying with such subcultures

Where I am, the subcultures are all tiny and intermingled. There's the "mainstream" and then "everyone else", which is goth-punk-arty-geeky-nerdy-freaky-weirdo.
I enjoyed reading this. I envy you to some extent; I have no idea who "my people" are. I have no sense of this. I haven't for years, and quite possibly never will again.
I definitely connected with this post- and with the other comments written about it. Thank you for writing it!
I don't know that I've ever "fit in" to any subculture, broad or acute, but I certainly have felt a need and desire to belong to a group whose public face resonates with my own sense of "difference". I would not want to belong to the mainstream.
I'd have to assume there are many Goths out there who do not connect with the "nouveaux" Goth scene; I am half-Goth myself, and probably wouldn't recognize the new dark ones. Not to mention they'd shun me like a cloudless dawn.
I was never in the goth culture in any sense, though I witnessed up close your enthusiasm for the Sydney scene. The only similar concept I've been involved with is the cult (if you will) of MINI. What you describe in terms of the subculture vibe is absolutely what I see in the MINI community. There are people who just drive MINIs, same as the are are people who are simply pale and wear black, but the subculture thing is there.
