Observing the Ghost

He is here. I woke and he was standing at my window, arms crossed. He smiles. I never liked the look on his face when he smiles. It's a sort of cruelly knowing look, like he knows a thousand ways to deliver punishment worse than death, or at least that he knows some dastardly secret you don't. People have told me I look like that.Supposedly he's my ( Read more... )

Parents matter little.

Of course. Technically, I don't have actual "parents" -- Dimitri Yuriev never raised me personally, and I'm only connected to him by DNA. My mother is some anonymous woman who gave her genes to science. So, I don't care very much.

It's just strange, hearing some of the things he says, imagining that he's my father, in a way.

He's an insane fool, though. I wouldn't trust him any farther than I could throw him. Or as far, for that matter.

DNA. Blood. Both matter little, don't you think?

Well, I can't say DNA doesn't matter at all in and of itself. After all, it's my cursed DNA that keeps me alive this long. I overproduce telomerase. But that's beside the point.

In terms of family bonds, of course it doesn't matter. My brothers raised each other. A swordsman halfway across the galaxy from my home planet raised me. I suppose he's about as much of a father as Yuriev ever was.

What about your parents? If you have any, that is.

I can think of a few people who would agree with you on the parents statement.

I'm sure. It seems to be a common theme in humanity as a whole -- humans and their parents don't get along, to say the least.

It a wonder we all haven't died out, but I guess that's because not all parents are as bad as the rest of them.

Heh. Nature has to have some way to keep all its creatures from refusing to take on the burden of continuing the species.

Sooner or later, science may take the place of parents, though. After all, I think my brothers and I turned out well enough.

Rubedo tends to vanish at crucial times, doesn't he? But you can see him...the City has a cruel streak. Rather like life.
