"Because he knows it irritates me?" Wesley asked as Regan headed out of the room, shaking his head. He knew Spike meant a lot to his daughter, and he was grateful to the vampire for being there for her after Fred had died and for dealing with Illyria when he couldn't, but he doubted the two of them would ever really get along. Spike liked to push his buttons, and he'd rather lik to...
He stopped himself. He'd never hurt Spike. Regan would never forgive him, and besides that, Spike - for all his faults - had done a lot of good. Although he'd never tell him that. He'd never hear the end of it if he did.
As he heard Regan saying Spike's name out in the other room, obviously having reached him, he picked up his mobile and flipped it open. He tabbed through his contact list until he found Rupert's number in England and hit the call button, waiting while it rang through. It was late afternoon there by now, so hopefully he wouldn't be interrupting anything.
"Hello?" a female voice answered.
"Evelyn?" Wesley said, recognizing the voice of Rupert's girlfriend. She was another Watcher lucky enough to escape the destruction of the Council by the First's lackies and had been helping him rebuild over the last year. "It's Wesley. Is Rupert there?"
"Wesley! Hold on just a minute - I'll get him."
He heard the phone receiver being set down and some noises, then a few moments later, his friend's voice came on the line, "Wesley! It's been awhile. How are you holding up? How's Regan?"
"We're...actually, that's why I'm calling. Regan and I have found some information - information that should allow us to bring Fred back."
There was silence for a moment on the other end of the line. "But I thought...her soul..."
"That's just it. A Soul Guardian visited Regan this morning and told her that Fred was still out there. Gave us the Journals of Me'dalci. Rupert, Fred's soul was taken elsewhere to be cleansed and protected. We can bring her back."
"How?"
Wesley ran his fingers over the passage in the open book in front of him and explained everything that they had discovered. "The weapon has to be the scythe you found. Illyria was the last pure demon to be killed, and Buffy was told that was what the scythe was used for before it was hidden to be used by the Slayer line."
"Wesley, God knows that I want this to be true, but are you sure about this? Regan's not a Slayer, and that scythe..."
"I know, but Regan's willing to learn to weild it, and if this is what's meant to kill Illyria, then she'll be able to even though she's not a Slayer. It's in the Journals, Rupert. The child of the one infected."
For a moment, Wesley was afraid that Rupert was going to say no. It was an irrational fear, but it was there nonetheless.
"All right. We'll try," Rupert said. "Willow and I will have the scythe here waiting when you arrive. And we'll go with you to the Abbey."
"Thank you, Rupert," he replied, his heart pounding. This could work. Fred might actually be back in his arms again soon. "Thank you."
"Take care, Wes. We'll see you soon."
"I'll let you know when we're ready to come over. Bye, Rupert."
Ending the call, Wesley stood up and headed out into the living room where Regan was waiting.
"Rupert promised to have the scythe waiting for us when we reached England," he told her. "What did Spike say?"
