On Yukwon’s last holiday before college, they visit Jaehyo’s hometown.

Jiho and Kyung wouldn’t stop teasing them about it, until Jihoon reminds them about their own summer trip to Japan - “and you two weren’t even fucking, hyung, or is there something we should know about?” - he grins before Kyung smacks him in the nape and that’s about it.
Yukwon doesn’t know if they are a couple or not - they are fucking, yes, from time to time, when the situation is appropriate, but he doesn’t think they are, not really. So he is somewhat surprised when Jaehyo brings up the idea one day.

One morning, to be precise, when Yuwkon is still busy nursing his hangover from last night’s party at Minhyuk’s.
“Come home with me for a couple days? This is gonna be your last truly free summer before the real shit starts…” he says before Yukwon pushes him off the sofa for talking too loud and at such an ungodly hour. Jaehyo just grins, and then Taeil brings them coffee and the rest of the morning, for Yukwon, is spent in some blur of a headache and slowly dissolving, life-saving caffeine.

-

He’s been to Busan before once, with family, but this is gonna be something different, something more fun, he knows that much from the moment they occupy their seats on the bus.

Yukwon thinks he smells the sea as soon as they get off - which is unlikely, he knows, since the terminal is located deep in the city’s bustling body. He sees mountains and smiling strangers all around, and while his brain knows this is the second biggest city in South-Korea, he gets the weird feeling of having arrived to a totally different land.

The sun is just about to go down when they hit the beach. It’s already buzzing with life - daytime-people still rushing after their business, eager to finally call it a day and nightlife-people already gathering with friends and associates, getting ready for another long summer night full of surprises and new experiences.

Haeundae is where they meet up with Jaehyo’s friends. It’s the real heart of the city, Jaehyo tells Yukwon, the long, shallow bay stretching far in both directions from where they stand, and Yukwon has been here before, has seen the sea before but he’s still so mesmerized by the sight he almost fails to notice the group of people walking up to them until Jaehyo elbows him in the ribs before running up to greet his friends.

Many of them are just as good-looking and dressed-up as Jaehyo - probably his old ulzzang friends, Yukwon thinks, and he sees a guy with tattoo-covered arms sticking out from under a casual, black wife-beater who he assumes might be responsible for the tattoo on Jaehyo’s wrist. Yukwon can hardly push aside the arising suspicion that every single person in this city is much better-looking than the average inhabitants of Seoul, as silly as it may sound.

They bring girls along, too - some of them clearly the obligatory, pretty and popular but mostly dumb girlfriends that greet Jaehyo and Yukwon with uninterested, small nods, and some of them apparently members of the group - or at least that’s what Yukwon assumes when they throw themselves at Jaehyo, squealing how much they missed his “motherfucking fag” face and asking about how things in Seoul are.

They buy drinks and snacks in a small 24/7 store and simply sit down in the sun-warmed sand, chatting and reminiscing about memories, laughing at inside jokes Yukwon hardly gets so he mostly stays silent, with Jaehyo’s arm carelessly thrown around his waist, gazing at the dark sea only a few feet away. Some people - young and old, couples and friends, families with kids - are in the water, giggling and running around, splashing the salty water at each other, seemingly not caring about their clothes, and for some reason, Yukwon imagines them chasing after the wavering dots of city lights that the sea reflects.

Busan is like Jaehyo, Yukwon muses, eyes wandering around the beach before settling back on the boy beside him. One of a kind, vibrant with life, mysterious, beautiful and unique - the kind of perfect that will never let you go once it draws you in. At times like these, Jaehyo’s special charm worries Yukwon - he wonders if he could ever forget him or the imprints he has made in Yukwon’s life, should it ever get to that point.

“You worry way too much, it’s starting to ruin your pretty little face” Jaehyo would say, because Yukwon is sure he could never grab the feeling of being overwhelmed by such a character like himself. No one could overwhelm the presence that is Ahn Jaehyo - or not in Yukwon’s eyes, at least.

As the drinks slowly start to make their effect on them, some of the girls’ attention starts turning towards Yukwon and soon enough he finds himself answering questions about high school, friends and himself in general.

“Back off, ladies” - Jaehyo laughs, pulling Yukwon closer and he presses a playful kiss on his head that seems to surprise no one except for Yuwkon. He’s somewhat used to it by now - alcohol and friends and being in each other’s seeing distance usually leads to something similar, but Yukwon is not sure if they had done anything like that in front of strangers before. Of course these people are not strangers, not to Jaehyo anyhow, but it still makes something warm and funny go off in Yukwon’s chest.

“If I could ever be any match for you, I’d keep him, Jaehyo… seriously, he smiles like a tiny kitty…” one of the girls giggles, sinking deeper into her boyfriend’s lap and they all laugh, sprinkling sand all around them. Somewhere down the beach, somebody shoots up some fireworks, and they all fall silent for a short moment, before abruptly starting to clap with almost childish excitement. Yukwon thinks he kind of likes these people.

When they run out of beer and soju, they leave the beach for a local bar Jaehyo says they all used to frequent in their highschool days - it’s small enough to sell drinks for underage guys but big enough to have all sorts of fun, according to the guy with the tattoos whose name may or may not be Jaesoo, Yuwkon is not sure.

It’s a nice enough bar, Yuwkon has to agree on that - just enough people to set the mood but not enough to be too stuffy, the music is just a tad bit louder than it would be comfortable and it doesn’t take him more than ten minutes to find himself on the dance floor.
He dances with strangers - dances with some pretty girls, grinds with some quite hot chicks, plays around with a few intoxicated boys and makes out with a slightly intoxicated Jaehyo in the middle of the mass, bodies pressed flush against each other, more laughing into each other’s mouth than actual kissing.

They move along to the pounding bass - the melodies of the songs are no longer relevant - Yukwon’s hands roam all over Jaehyo’s body and they gaze playfully into each other’s foggy eyes, smirking at each other in some kind of an unofficial contest, trying to see who snaps sooner. The colorful lights seem liquid on Jaehyo’s face like a fucking piece of some modern, indescribable art which he might or might not say out loud, because Jaehyo starts laughing and Yukwon feels himself loosing his grip on reality.

After they leave the club, Jaehyo interlaces their fingers and they walk back to the beach to cool down a little in the soft night breeze that smells like salt and cars and seafood and life.

Jaehyo makes him take off his shoes and chases him into the sea, catching him in knee-deep water, whirling him playfully around before kissing him once with a wink.
He suggests checking out another pub that he used to love back in the days, where Yukwon “could be the prince of the dance floor” and he ponders for a few seconds before grinning and nodding in approval.

They are young and free, after all.
The night is also still young. Still young, and all theirs.
