~*~

They called him the Wanderer, the Restless, amongst many other names, and he felt familiar with each of them. He could not stay in one place for long - there was something, like a silent call, that drove him around, from town to town like he was looking for something but never finding out what it was. He knew of the big cities but felt reluctant to visit them. Instead, he preferred the small villages shattered across the land, surrounded with rich crops and small patches of forests, the cloud-crowned mountains on the horizon constantly calling out for him. He never dared to oblige their summoning - he just traveled from village to village, and somebody always offered him a place to stay for the night. Nobody ever asked him questions, like they sensed he’d be unable to answer them.

He spent many nights out on the fields too, especially after rainy days, when he’d just lay on the ground, breathing in the painfully familiar smell of soil that was heavier than usually, till his head started to spin. As he buried his fingers in the soft dirt and let his mind wander to memories - memories of touches but no face, ghost-kisses but no lips to give them, ravaging need of something he had no memories of ever experiencing - he felt lonelier than ever.

After falling asleep on one such night, body exhausted and mind restlessly wondering about how the stars seemed to fade over a nearby, big city; he wake amongst sky-tall, enormous, cold-looking buildings that hovered over him like predators looking down on their prey. He felt frightened, but at the same time, excitement flared up in his veins. He was trembling with amazement as he looked around on the wide streets, staring at the cars rushing past and lights of all colors flickering against the bright sunlight. He could not smell the comforting scent of the earth anymore - but hundreds of new smells filled his nose, and mingled with those smells was something - someone - so familiar his chest tightened.

He got on his feet in one swift, graceful movement. People passing him barely saved him an approving glance. He was no longer covered in dirt, his clothes fresh and tight, his hair softly framing his young face, complementing his sun-kissed skin. He began walking through the crowd, knowing exactly where to go as if his destination was suddenly engraved in his mind - or more like as if it had been there the whole time, pushed behind his thoughts like a constant bugging, and a moment later, he was there, standing in a tiny alley. That was where he spotted him.

A tall, broad-shouldered figure stood a few steps away, huge but empty eyes staring ahead, long fingers absent-mindedly twirling a zippo lighter. A tiny flame flared up with every second move of his quick fingers.

“Chanyeol!” came a loud, happy cry before the dark-haired boy run up to the tall one. He didn’t notice the warm tears that started running down his beautiful face when the other’s sorrowful eyes filled up with unspeakable delight and he threw his long arms around him.

They stood there like that for a long time, holding on to each other and squeezing so hard like they never wanted to separate again, and the clockwork of time softly clicked forward, cogs fitting together.

The never-ceasing, hollow feeling of some great loss seemed to ease in their chests, and when they pulled away, both of their faces were soaked with grateful tears.

“Jongin… Jongin it’s really you isn’t it, I wasn’t sure, I… I didn’t know anything and I was just so alone but you found me, Jongin…” the tall boy whispered, fingers tightly folding together the other boy’s, deep eyes sparkling up with timeless liveliness. Even the lighter in his free hand stopped moving for a second.

“I didn’t know either but suddenly… I just woke up and then I just knew you were here, Chanyeol I missed you so, so much…” the smaller boy whispered back happily, relief washing over him, before confusion furrowed his brows.

“But… who is this “Jongin” you keep calling me… I’m… I’m Kai, Chanyeol, don’t you know…?”
