Another Three Months of the Year

May 19, 2007 10:27

After a fully intensive first school year at USC with its most rigorous, challenging courses taken, I at long last have summer to relax...

Did I say relax? I mean work my ass off. Here's my average work week:

Monday: Working at George Lucas Bldg Operations
Tuesday: More Lucas Operations
Wednesday: Acting Classes, more Lucas Operations
Thursday: ( Read more... )

Cool. Sounds like everything is working out really well. I mean, of all of the successful screenwriters I've spoken to (I haven't had chance to speak to many directors) they all worked their way up, and made many of their first contacts by impressing people "in the trenches" as it were. So you're rocking that ( ... )

Unfortunately, I never met him. I did meet Lauren Shuler Donner for a little bit -- you know how they say Hollywood is a boy's club? Well, she makes sure everyone knows that she's manlier, tougher, and rougher than anyone who dares to challenge her. Anyone who can run with her and work with her -- and still have the creativity to notice good material -- out to be a great guy. No, I don't know him, but having heard he worked with the Donner Company, I can tell he's great.

Google him sometime -- he has an interesting history. Nothing negative, but he has a neat background.

Well, she makes sure everyone knows that she's manlier, tougher, and rougher than anyone who dares to challenge her.

Poor Dick Donner. ;)

He actually DID read the script this past weekend and emailed me back. First line is just awesome to hear;

"You're a damn good writer - I'm impressed."

I don't get my writing ego stroked so often (usually, people stroke my illustration ego, but the majority calls my writing a waste of time -- you ever get that?), so this was good to hear.

He asked if I had anything high concept in the works (which I do -- tho' I think many people do) because they're looking to setup a studio feature. And he asked if I had a favorite genre.

So... thats fun.

*snaps* to telling it like it is and getting recognition for it! You give me hope for the working world. :)

As to myths - I'm taking a class on Tibetan Buddhism. They have some pretty awesome mythology going on in Tibet, India as well - might be something to look at. Some friends of mine read the Ramayana, a story that has a lot of revisionist feminist scholars writing diatribes. I wonder if you could look at a character like Sita from a different perspective and give her a separate life within a similar context. Hope this helps and good luck!

On another thing you mentioned...

Your Lovecraftian script -- straight adaptation of an exisiting story, or more a pastiche or tribute, a la IN THE MOUTH OF MADNESS (which I own a copy of, but have yet to watch... I hear it's so-so, but can still be a total mindfuck)?

Among other scripts ready to write, as it were, I have a contemporary Lovecraftian story that recalls Shadow Over Innsmouth... sorta. Almost not at all -- but enough. I'd just be interested to hear some general things you want to do with yours.

That whole development with your internship rocks...that's like the classic Hollywood dream scenario!

You're a secret editing weapon! Awesome! But remember, you must use your power for good, not evil!
