Life was simpler when I just had to choose between chocolate or regular milk at lunchtime

I am currently in a Rather Large Tiff with my parents (re: mostly my mother) over something Utterly Ridiculous, with no foreseeable end insight.  And I need impartial views to decide what to do … by Monday.

This point of view is knowingly outside of the circle of exactly understanding what all is going on-- and should be taken as such:

I think ensuring your psychological well-being is more important than trying to add some shine to your grad school application (although WHAT a shine it would be!).

I think you're leaning towards the right decision, keeping your sanity.

I think I agree. Your cons outweigh your pros. And probably the glares will lessen after a while.

Ignoring the fact that I would adore the chance to hang out with you in a tiny Missouri town this summer, I have to say I think making yourself miserable is not the best way to help your chances for grad school. It's not like you're killing your chances by not doing this summer project, is it? You'll be able to get in other ways. Other opportunities might come up after this that are tons more enjoyable.

Your personal happiness is not at all worth less than any of the logical pros that you listed. It's a big deal. And because of that I say turn down the offer. Your mother will just have to deal.

It's obvious what you truly want. Your sense of duty (and the amazing emotional strings parents can pull) are making you feel torn, but its obvious from your tone that this didn't excite you for one minute.

In short, my advice to you is to go home, see your dogs, and emotionally heal the wounds that school has put in your soul so you can be back and ready for more abuse next year.

Seriously, your mother will find something else to harp about, and you wont care because you'll be cuddling a puppy.
