We think upon moving in we got a shitty dishwasher (though it is brand new).  It takes a little over TWO HOURS to completely wash.dry dishes.  This is our 3rd or 4th time using it since moving in because I just cannot justify that kind of waste of energy/water when it is typically significantly quicker/less wasteful to wash by hand and air-dry ( Read more... )

I have a newish dishwasher and I find that it takes a lot longer than the other dishwashers I've known in the past. I don't do the heated drying to save money on that part and I find the dishes are usually dry enough by the time the heat from the water/steam. However, even without that it seems to take an hour which I think is too long. I definitely don't run it until it's packed up.

I wash all my dishes by hand. 1. I don't have a dishwasher in my apartment. 2. I'm only one person so it doesn't even matter. But you live with someone, no? So, it's not that big a deal for me. But when I used to live at home, it didn't take longer than 30 minutes as I recall. Is it taking 2 hours to wash the dishes? That sounds a bit unnatural.

An hour tho i rarely notice. its a set it and forget it. i think its only an hour, could be wrong. and usually the more 'efficient' the model the longer things take cause its using less power. want to say dads year or two old quiet model is longer to wash/dry

Yeah, mom and dad's new dishwasher takes a long time and it's supposed to be an energy saver model. So I second the longer=efficient stance. It doesn't make sense to me either but I guess that's how it is.

Our nice-ish but not crazy hardcore dishwasher, from around 1999, runs 99 minutes on normal cycle.

Generally, dishwashers use less energy to wash a full load versus doing them by hand, unless you are one of the hardcore people who manages to wash everything in just one fill of the sink (quite hard if you have lots of ickky stuff, perhaps?), AND only fill the rinse sink once and just dunk stuff to rinse it - in my opinion that doesn't get all the soap off super-well.

Overall, it's possible to win doing them by hand, versus a dishwasher, but hard. You have to be good, and I'm of the opinion that it's probably not worth the time you'll spend on it for the quite small energy savings you'll get by doing it. Take a look at your cost per kilowatt-hour for electricity, and figure out what you'll save. It'll be small. Most of the energy is just from heating the water, in the first place, either way you do it.

Hopefully I didn't bomb you with too much here. You might like: Reply

Update: I checked on this, and that's normal cycle including sanitizing AND heated drying. So it's more like the full experience.
