The Photograph
He stared blankly at the computer screen. His mouth was partialy open as he took in what he saw. Another message blinked onto the screen. Hello? Are you there? He hestitated to type back that he had gotten what she had said just moments before. But he went ahead and typed. Yea, i jus went afk a bit, sry. She didnt reply for a long time it seemed. He just didnt know how to respond to what he had read. She typed once more...
Did you get what i wrote?

She finished typing and pressed enter. What could he be thinking? She felt as if an eternity had passed before he answered her back. Yea... Her heart raced. She had a sick feeling come over her and she wished she could have taken back everything she had typed a few minutes back. But she had to tell him her feelings toward him. She just couldnt be his friend anymore. She knew she liked him for more than that now. Well... imma go now. Im starving. Guess ill see ya tommrow at school?
Of course... Later She replied back.
Ugh. Well, at least he didnt seem upset. How could she be so stupid. He didnt share her feelings. She had prepared herself for this situation... but why did it feel like she didnt?

He turned off the monitor after putting up a brief away message. A heavy sigh escaped him as he leaned back in the rolling chair. Everything she had typed he saw in his mind as he closed his eyes. Him getting off probably made her feel awful, but he couldnt just stay there. He felt awkward and wasnt shure what to say. She always had a way of catching him by suprise. The way they met was her first example. She had come around a corner with a large pile of books and papers but didnt see him as she ran right into him. He grinned when he rememebered how the papers went flying and she landed right on her butt. She wouldnt stop apologizing for a week after that. After that incident they seemed to always see each other and became inseperable friends. That day in 6th grade five years ago was something he would always remember. She looked so cute in that flannel uniform skirt and the button up polo. She seemed to dress like nobodys opinion mattered. If she liked it, everybody better because she wasnt going to change for anybody. He always liked that about her. Glancing at his watch, he noticed he'd been sitting there thinking about her for a good 20 minutes. He actually DID get hungry and decided to go downstairs after showering up.

She couldnt just sit there. All the other AIM buddies she was talking to became decreasingly interesting after he logged off. A fear rose inside of her everytime she thought about him. She had to get him off her mind. She logged off and ran downstairs to get something to eat. No one was home that night. Her parents either were always working late or off with some friends at a club God knows where. They never really informed her and her brother what the daily plans were. They seemed to be spur of the moment people. Her smaller brother was visiting a friend's house next door and was supposedly coming in soon. The streetlights were noticeably bright and he knew better than to stay out much past them coming on. She searched the cubbard for a couple boxes of macarroni and started some water to boil. She figured to go ahead and fix something for them both to eat. No telling when her parents would be in. She rung the nieghbors up to see about her brother, and found out they had started a movie that would be ending soon. She let them know it was fine since she hadnt finished dinner and she'd rather not have her brother pestering her about when the food would be done anyway. She set down the phone and looked up only to be greeted by an old photo on the fridge. She stared at it with a heavy heart remembering the moment it was taken. It was of her in her goofy old flannel skirt and with that boy she had literally ran into so long ago. It usually brought only fun and wonderful memories but this time it brought a wave of fear and sadness. She stared at the picture a bit longer before deciding that she should call him.

He had gotten cleaned up before going to the kitchen to look for some food. He noticed the yellow sticky note on the fridge with a $20 attached. Uh oh. Pizza tonight. It wasnt anything out of the ordinary for him. He usually had pizza, take out, or some sory of fast food. He hadnt had a homecooked meal in a while. It made him think of her again. She was a wonderful cook. She had learned from the many nights her parents were gone and she had to find something for herself. They usually had stocked cubbords but never left her money to order out like his parents did. Her parents gambeled and never really cared to offer the kids money for anything. But what made his mouth water was her infamous macaroni and cheese she made so well. Everytime she made it it seemed better than the first. She added salsas, Velveeta cheese and various spices of sorts. He figured pizza would suffice for now though. He went to the phone but it rang before he picked it up. Argh. He was hungry.. who was calling him?
Hello?
~ * ~
He had picked up rather quickly it seemed when she called. Was he going to call her too? She hesitated a hello when she answered. She didnt know why she was so nervous!
Hey Girl, whats up?
Oh, nothing just calling to see what you were doing...
Eh.. Was about to call Domino's but you stopped me! Haha.. You?
Oh.. not calling her.. No matter. Maybe she shouldnt bring up the AIM conversation.
Making mac and cheese... my parents have ran off to some god awful place again.
DUDE! I was just craving that!!! You make the best mac and cheese.
Well, if you like it so much why dont you come get some?
Awesome.. see ya in a few.
Aight.. later.
She hung up and sighed with relief. It wasnt as awkward a conversation as she had precieved it would be. She smiled... she loved how he loved her cooking. He seemed to be the only one. Her brother would bug her for it and then not even eat half the plate when they sat down to eat together. Although when she left the room, the food would magically disappear. Hmm. She started the cheese melting and the macaroni boiling before she dashed upstairs.

He threw on and old tshirt and grabbed his old Etnies to put on before heading toward the door. He sat down to put them on only to look up to an old photograph of him and her. It caught him by suprise but whats new? He always liked that picture of them. His favorite actually. It always reminded him of old times in Jr. High. Those were some great years for the two of them. It felt like yesterday when that picture was taken. They had just gotten in from school that day and her mom just had to get a picture cuz they looked so cute or something to that matter. They both hated pictures but they posed for her because they were both hyper due to the excessive chocolate they had had that day. They were so young and awkward. Him and his braces. Her and her glasses. Ah. Those glasses. He always adored her glasses. They made her look so beautiful. When she had gotten contacts a couple years back, he wanted to say something about them but didnt. She loved them, and he was glad she was happy with them. He took one more look at the photo before heading out the door. Those were the days.

She stared into the mirror in her bathroom for a bit making shure she looked alright. She grabbed her makeup purse out but then second thought it. It would look like she was doing it all for him and she didnt want to make him feel out of place. Plus she was in her sleeping clothes. She figured that would look even odder. Realising she cared what he thought about her looks took her aback. She usually didnt care what people thought. But tonight was different. She had thought about some things and he was really special to her. She decided just to redo her tussled bun and put in her contacts. Argh. Her contacts.. she had forgotten that her prescription had run out. She couldnt get more till the next day. Her glasses would have to do for tonight. The doorbell rang and it made her jump. She was so caught up in thought that she almost forgot he lived just down the road and would be there so soon. She squealed with excitement and ran to the kitchen to check on the food. Ah! She had almost burned it. Thank god he came when he did or there wouldnt be anytihng to eat. RING RING!!! Oh yea! She ran to the door again. How could she be so forgetful. It wasnt like her!
~ * ~
He rang the door bell repeatedly. Geez, why do girls always take so long! She soon answered and greeted him with a big hug. He held her a bit longer than usual. Her hugs were always so warm and gentle. After he let go he noticed her attire for the evening. PJ pants and a old nirvana tshirt. Her hair was up in a big bun and didnt seem like she really did much at all for him coming over. He was scared she was at first, but he should have known better. The most noticeable thing about her was her glasses though. He wondered why she was wearing them. It had been ages. He had almost forgotten how much beautifuller that they made her.
So! Where's my food?!?!
Chill out.. come in and go sit at the dining table..
Fine. But im starving, woman. I want my food soon! He laughed.
Food should be ready in about 10 minutes.
She sat him at the dining table and walked into the kitchen. He watched her go. He couldnt get that girl out of his head. Was it just a big joke? She seemed as if that conversation on the computer didnt happen. Maybe she takes everything back? No matter, he still couldnt stop thinking about those words. He kinda hoped she would tell him outloud. They were so sweet and kind. She actually thought that about him? They were powerful but he wished that they were said in person. It felt so odd coming from a computer screen. But it was probably easier for her. She couldnt see his face nor could he see hers. He had always thought that she would make a good girlfriend/wife to any guy one day. But he never really thought about that guy being him. Its not that he wouldnt consider it but they were best friends. Was he willing to put those five years on the line?
enjoi... im out..
