Wow, it's November already? Where did the time fly? Guess I better start knockin' some of this backlog out.
Last time I saw Nikka Costa was at Smith's Olde Bar, but I can't remember how long ago that actually was. Might've been pre-blog or very early into it, either way it's been quite awhile and it was an amazing show. For those not familiar with Nikka Costa, she's a little gal with a big voice that sings soul and funk with a rock edge. Basically going down the road that Sly Stone paved decades before. It's a good mix, it's a good show and I was looking forward to seeing her again. Even if it meant going to the Loft.
Picked up Kim so I could show off my new car and we headed over to the venue. Got there right in between acts, so we timed it well. There was a fairly small crowd in attendance, and honestly they could've moved the show downstairs to Vinyl and still have had room. But I'm glad they didn't because I dislike Vinyl even more than the Loft. And even though there wasn't a huge crowd at the show, I still ended up knowing and running into a host of folks like Calvin, Gretchen, Clay, Mark, Alexis, Garland, Takillya, Shalewa and Gudrun. Not sure why there weren't more people at the show, but it has been awhile since she's had a record out or toured, so I'm sure people have kind of forgotten about her. Because I remember that her last show at Smith's was packed out.
And speaking of her last show at Smith's, Kim and I are convinced that she was wearing the exact same outfit. Maybe it's just coincidence or maybe she's just a fan of shirts that require nipple tape. Who knows? But that hippie styled shirt did make her look like a dead ringer if they finally make a Janis Joplin biopic. Or possibly if they ever do a live action movie about the Electric Mayhem, then she could play Janice in that one. And I'd opt for that movie as her keyboard player would make for a great Dr. Teeth. Not sure who would play Animal though. But I digress.
The show itself was good, but not as good as her prior show at Smith's. That show had so much more energy, enough that I still recall it fairly well. I'm thinking that this show had less energy because it was at the Loft and it sucks all the energy out of perfomance, because the place kind of sucks overall. The band was certainly trying and Nikka was singing her heart out. But for me, it still didn't have that punch that a good funk and soul show should have. Wasn't saying it was a bad show, just not as good as I was hoping it would be. They did a lot of songs off the new album, but also played a lot of her older stuff which I was more familiar with. Can't say her new stuff really blew me away either, so maybe that's part of why I wasn't too excited about this particular show.
So this show was a bit of a letdown. But at least I have that memory of her show at Smith's. Guess you can dress yourself up in the same thing, but that doesn't mean it's going to come across the same way.
