February concerts and such

Welcome back to another quick snapshot of stuff I did last month.
Whee.

Tim & Eric Awesome Show! Great Job Tour - 2/5 @ Variety Playhouse

Admittedly, I'm not a huge fan of the show.  But I have enjoyed what I've seen, not enough to add it to my TiVo season pass or anything, but whatever, I chuckle.  So met up with Rikki after she got off work and we headed down to see what their live version would be like (since I missed their last live performance at the Plaza Theatre).  We got there pretty late, but even though we missed a lot, I was pleased with what we caught.  For me, it's almost like the show, a little goes a long way.  I will say this, these guys have some way devoted hard core fans.

Patton Oswalt - 2/7 @ The Earl

Now this was my highlight of the month, because I love me some Patton.  Pound for pound (and I'm not making a fat joke here), he's probably my favorite comedian out there.  He could just stand there and be silent and I'd still find myself giggling.  I bought my tickets early for this one because I knew it was going to sell out and it did.  Hung out with a mess of folks at the show like Li'l Fella, Jordan, Chelsea, Other Jordan, Jeffro, Austin, Henry, Warren and of course Rikki.  He only performed for an hour, but since it was all new material it was worth it and awesome.  Apparently he did two hours of stuff the night before in Athens, along with getting completely shitfaced, so our show was a bit more tame by comparison.  I'm not complaining though, especially since I got the last of the very cool autographed show posters!

Cleopatra - 2/9 @ The Fox Theatre

Not a band, but the movie.  Yes, the 60's epic starring Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton.  Since I consider myself a film buff (while others probably consider me a film nerd or film snob), it does surprise me that I've never seen this one prior.  So couldn't pass up the opportunity to see it on the big screen, especially as it was playing at the lavish Fox Theatre.  Too perfect to miss in that regards.  The movie was good, they certainly don't make them like that anymore.  And I can finally understand what the hubbub about Elizabeth Taylor was all about, rawr.

My Bloody Valentine Debutante Brawl - 2/12 @ The Earl

Ah, it's good to have the Atlanta Rollergirls starting back up again.  And to celebrate their 5th season and introduce their new skaters, they held a debutante "brawl" at the Earl featuring bands and so forth.  It was good to get back into the mix with all my old derby friends, but it was also quite apparent that there was this whole host of skaters and other folks I had no clue about.  I'm definitely finding myself moving towards the fringe of the derby world, but I'm still hanging in there.  I dig them so.

Black Tide - 2/17 @ Masquerade

I like Black Tide.  I enjoy their 80's shredder metal sound.  But for God's sake, come up with some new songs already.  I've seen them a ton of times over the past year and a half and it's been the exact same set.  Even down to the same cover songs.  Would it kill them to throw something new into the mix?  Aren't they about due to record a new album or something?  But don't listen to me, I'm just complaining because I'm old.  At least I felt ancient amongst the throngs of teens at the show.  Maybe I am getting too old for this?

Trail Of Dead - 2/24 @ Criminal Records

I was only here as a favor to my friend Katy Graves.  Musically I don't mind Trail of Dead, however personally they annoy me.  I've had to interact with them three times now and they just rub me the wrong way.  Maybe they're just temperamental artists or maybe they're just dicks.   But at least I didn't have to deal with them too long and got to catch up with my pal Kim.  So there's always a silver lining.

Atlanta Rollergirls season opening bout - 2/28 @ Yaarab Shrine Center

Woo hoo!  Derby is back!  So excited.  I missed part of the first bout between the Atlanta all-stars and the team from Pittsburgh, but unfortunately I was there to watch them lose to the Steel City Derby Demons.  But Atlanta put up a good fight, so there was that.  And then the next bout was between the league champions, Toxic Shocks and the Apocalypstix.  With the Shocks once again proving why they're the best team in the league.  But the 'Stix rallied hard and did an amazing job.  I think they have a lot of potential this season for a team that was pretty much in the gutter last year.  And might I add that it was so great to see so many familiar faces again.  It was kind of like the first day of school after a summer break.  The next bout is March 28th if you want to catch yourself a case of derby fever.  You know where I'll be.
