Yes, I know it's almost June, but I've finally gotten around to putting this stuff down.
Various reasons why I haven't been updating, but no reason to get into them.
So let's knock these out, shall we?
K'Naan - 3/4 @ Vinyl
K'Naan is a rapper/poet/musician originally from Somalia. He's definitely along the lines of that "conscious hip hop" kind of thing. It was a pretty good show. Although apparently a fight broke out during a long song he was performing, that was kind of ironic.
Britney Spears - 3/5 @ Philips Arena
Sometimes you just want to watch a show and not hear it, this would be one of those shows. Thank God for earplugs. Before Britney, I had to endure a performance by the Pussycat Dolls. They're basically strippers who don't take off their clothes and for the most part don't sing, except for the lead chick. Waste of time. Britney actually put on a decent show, I'll have to say. It was kind of like a Cirque Du Soleil with a slutty lead singer.
Cartoon Madness IV / Greasepaint - 3/6 @ Alcove Gallery
Knew a couple of the artists involved in this gallery opening and several of the musicians in Greasepaint. So swung by and checked out the opening and caught a fair bit of Greasepaint's performance. Good stuff.
Pulp Fiction - 3/6 @ East Atlanta Ice House
Another art show I went to this particular night, but I knew more of the people attending. I really enjoyed getting a chance to spend time with Rikki, Kim, Austin, Dimara, Sarah, Andrew, Sally, Chris, Matt, Amber, etc. But I was a bit disappointed by the art. It cost $7 bucks to get in to the art show and there was maybe 7 pieces of art. Kind of a letdown.
Tongo Hiti - 3/12 @ Trader Vic's
Wondering what to do in Atlanta on a Thursday night? Well, there's always Mai Tai Thursdays at Trader Vic's featuring Tongo Hiti. Rikki and I were looking for something to do and this is where we ended up. Always a fun time, which was made even better as it turned out to be Mike Geier's birthday. Birthday cake AND Polynesian styled renditions of Styx and Celine Dion...what's not to love?
Wovenhand - 3/13 @ 40 Watt
Once a month, there's usually one show that's a must see. This was that show. I love me some Wovenhand, as their latest CD took the top spot in my 2008 Top 10 attests. Usually I have pretty good concert timing, but unfortunately not this time. They were already onstage by the time I got there, but still was able to enjoy over an hour of music. Well worth the long drive to and from Athens and being super tired the next day. I was just glad I got a chance to see them again, especially in a crowd that was very respectful and attentive. Nothing worse than hearing people around you yap it up during the entire concert.
Junior Brown - 3/14 @ Variety Playhouse
Another show I was looking forward to seeing, but wasn't as good as I hoped. He didn't have his wife with him playing rhythm guitar, which kind of took away from his sound and his voice wasn't as strong as I had seen in the past. But overall, it was a decent show. It was like finding something you haven't worn forever in the back of your closet and putting it on and remembering how comfy it was. Also if you had any fetish for DILFs, this was your show, because it was chock full of old guys in cowboy hats.
Forty Fives - 3/27 @ Star Bar
I've missed so many of their recent reunion shows of late, that I didn't want that to happen again. I always loved going to see the Forty Fives and this was no exception. They were playing on a bill for a benefit show, but I can't remember for what or for whom. All I know is that when I got there very late, the Woggles were still on the stage. Good old dependable Star Bar...you can show up at 1AM on a weekend night and know that the headliner still hasn't hit the stage. Unfortunately, it was the full Forty Fives line up as one of the members missed their flight, but even only having 1/2 of the original members was still a great show. Also enjoyed hearing some of the new songs they've been working on. Wonder if they're going to record again?
Atlanta Rollergirls Bout - 3/28 @ Yaarab Shrine Center
Another month and another awesome bout of roller derby action with the Atlanta Rollergirls. Congrats to the Rumble B's (Atlanta's secondary all-star team) and the Denim Demons for their respective wins. If you haven't checked them out yet, there's still three more months for you to do so.
Raphael Saadiq - 3/28 @ Variety Playhouse
I've always liked Tony Toni Tone, so I was excited to see this show. Especially after hearing Raphael's latest solo album, which is classic Motown sounding R&B, aka the good shit. Going to see the show was like going to see early Marvin Gaye, Smokey Robinson or Sam Cooke. Everyone on stage was dressed up in suits and looking sharp. The only thing they were missing was a horn section. And you know you're at a good concert, when it's a sold a show and no one is hanging out in the lobby. If he comes back through, check it out and you won't be disappointed.
