So I thought about making three separate Top 10 posts, but what the Hell, I'll just combine them all.
Here you go:
Top 10 concerts for 2009:
#10) Black Diamond Heavies - 5/28 @ Star Bar
- Raw, dirty swamp blues rock. These guys are amazing live and I enjoy seeing them every chance I get.
#9) David Cross - 10/18 @ Tabernacle
- Even though the audience tried my patience and even more of David Cross', this show was hilarious.
#8) Lily Allen - 4/15 @ Variety Playhouse
- I don't know why I really enjoy Lily Allen, but I do. And she put on a great show.
#7) Grupo Fantasma - 7/31 @ Variety Playhouse
- One of my favorite live bands performing in one of my favorite venues. It's a win/win.
#6) El Vez & Los Straighjackets - 12/2 @ The Earl
- I like both acts and they were fun together. Great way to get into the Christmas spirit.
#5) Raphael Saadiq - 3/28 @ Variety Playhouse
- Like going back in time to a real soul revue. Damn fine time.
#4) Cinematic Titanic - 5/16 @ Alliance Theatre
- Getting to see the majority of the MST3K crew live on stage was almost worth the price of admission, the reason it wasn't totally worth it was because it was a pricey ticket.
#3) A Charlie Brown Christmas - 12/19 @ The Earl
- I don't know how I missed this in 2008, but I'll be going to this event every year they have it. Getting to hear the classic Vince Guaraldi/Charlie Brown Christmas music performed live is pure joy.
#2) Elbow - 8/8 @ Center Stage
- Simply an AMAZING show. They sounded spectacular. Didn't see a lot this year, but so glad I caught this one.
#1) Wovenhand - 3/13 @ The 40 Watt
- One of my all time faves, so it's a tough show for anyone to beat. And no one did, although Elbow came pretty darn close. Congrats David Eugene Edwards!
Top 10 albums for 2009:
#10) The Avett Brothers / I And Love And You
#9) Cazals / What Of Our Future
#8) The Sounds / Crossing The Rubicon
#7) Metalocalypse: Dethklok / Dethalbum II
#6) Richard Hawley / Truelove's Gutter
#5) Lily Allen / It's Not Me, It's You
#4) Grant-Lee Phillips / Little Moon
#3) Noisettes / Wild Youngs Hearts
#2) Mos Def / The Ecstatic
#1) Razorlight / Slipway Fires
Top 10 movies for 2009:
#10) Big Fan
- I know Patton Oswalrt is hilarious, but who knew he could also be sad, pathetic and creepy while being entertaining.
#9) Red Cliff
- Gorgeously shot. John Woo should've gone back to Asia years ago if it meant him making good movies again.
#8) Up
- Once again, Pixar can do no wrong.
#7) Paranormal Activity
- I saw it before hype and it measure up. Creepiest scary flick I've seen in ages.
#6) Coraline
- Loved the animation and seeing it in 3D was even better.
#5) Zombieland
- Funniest zombie movie since Shaun Of The Dead.
#4) Fantastic Mr. Fox
- Honestly, I didn't have high hopes for this one, but I was really surprised at how much I enjoyed it.
#3) District 9
- Most original movie I saw all year. Maybe they should let folks with new storeis start making movies again.
#2) Drag Me To Hell
- Sam Raimi is back to form. Could see this movie over and over. The only thing missing was a cameo by Bruce Campbell.
#1) Star Trek
- Another flick I didn't have strong expectations for, but J. J. Abrams made me a fan of Star Trek. Screw you George Lucas.
And no, Avatar didn't make the list. Beautifully rendered, but stock storyline. And I don't believe it will hold up over the years.
