I found this on digg, detailing the world's top ranking universities (in the world according to US News and World Report, which means nothing). Here are some highlights

at first i was taken aback by the US ranking disparity even though it was put out by USNews as well. in the US ones, Berkeley is #21, UCSD is 38, UCI 44, UCSB & UCDavis 47.
then for some reason Berkeley is significantly better in the world that the US (21 > 8), they are able to stick 154 schools in between #38 and #44, and the two 47s jump up to 141 (UCSB) and 170 (UCD)... i dunno.
then again, im not that smart. people from all those schools could handle me im sure.
I mean, UCLA's ranked 25th/26th in the nation annually, but to think that it only slipped 6 ranks was ridiculous! Looking at the rankings you cited, I think those are for undergraduates (maybe I'm wrong). The rankings posted for the world may be based on the institution as a whole. It sort of makes sense. Take Berkeley. It grosses more money each year in grants than most of the schools ranked above it in College Rankings.
I never liked the US News and World Report Rankings on anything. They're ridiculous and erroneous. They're also biased. I just thought it was pretty interesting for the same reason you did - namely that I've seen the College Rankings and scratched my head at the disparity.
