To be honest, I have never thought of it that way, but it does make sense.
I was a bit hesitant on the stairway-to-nowhere front, as I do know some houses have had the attic blocked in such a way. But, having seen The Lodger, it seems to be more significant than I first thought. And I always accepted that the lack of Amy backstory has been due to her trust issues, etc, but her not being real seems more likely. But then it makes the whole season feel cheap. :/
But I have really liked how this season has been structured and the finale has been so epically different from what we've seen before, I just hope Moffat lives up to expectations (and this means no resets, cop-outs or technobabble explaining things away!). Fingers crossed, ey?
Yeah, I never noticed the stairway thing, and it could just be a constraint of what sets were available. I watched The Lodger a second time last night, and I think that provides some good evidence.
I read recently that Moffat only approved of Karen Gillan because of her looks. That's wrong any which way, but if he was approaching the character as a projection/robot, maybe he didn't think it mattered as much. I haven't been that impressed with her acting, but it would be more acceptable if she was that way because she only knows what she's been programmed to do. Honestly, I'm not that attached to her.
