PERSONALITY:
Saber is a composed young girl that often comes off as cold or detached, showing little emotion even when Shirou walks in on her in the bath at one point, but that’s only because of the circumstances in her life in which she grew up too fast and chose to cast aside her emotions along with the fact that she was a woman in order to focus on her goals and what was expected of her as the King of Britain. But, underneath the stony and distant mask she built up, she’s actually kind, compassionate and concerned for others--she worries greatly about Shirou not simply because he's her Master, but because the boy cannot seem to keep himself safe, and calls out to Rin in concern despite the other girl technically being a temporary ally/eventual enemy.
Being a knight-- no less the King of Knights-- she has an unwavering, though a bit overwhelming, sense of duty (her indignation at Caster killing her own Master), desire to see justice done (she refuses to involve innocents in the War if it can be helped, becoming livid when others do so)and is wholly dedicated to what she sets her mind to; there’s little that can change it, a fact that sets her and her Master, Shirou, at odds at times as he’s just as stubborn-- he feels that she should let the past lie, to move on and she simply cannot put herself over her responsibility to her kingdom. Also did we mention the noble selfless and sacrificing aspect to her-- going after the Holy Grail for the sole purpose of preventing the fall of her kingdom, instead of saving herself from death and choosing to use an attack that she knew would leave her in critical condition in order to keep Shirou safe being examples of this. Basically what the ideal knight and king should be.
She does have her moments of awkwardness though-- most notably when the young girl shows through/something has triggered her feminine side and she’s unsure of how to deal with it (Shirou causing her to become almost enraged when he laughs at her comment that a plush lion is cute), and she simply cannot take jokes at all; evidenced by the "Fake Bad End" one can get by making Shirou tell Saber they are fasting for the day as a prank, in which she "knocks him into the next world with her practice shinai of anger". Her appetite is a force to be reckoned with after all, and she never forgets a dish-- much to Shirou's vexation.
TIMELINE: Fate route, after defeating Gilgamesh and destroying the Grail-- before saying farewell to Shirou and waking in her own time.
BACKGROUND:
Saber is, in fact, a female King Arthur-- born Arturia Pendragon to the British King Uther Pendragon. Uther realized, though, that Britain would never accept Arturia as heir and ruler of the kingdom because she was a woman and so kept her birth and very existence hidden from all but a select few, and had Merlin entrust her to the loyal knight Ector. Sir Ector raised her as though she was his own child, equal with his flesh and blood son Kay, for fifteen years until the time that Uther dies; leaving no known heir for the throne and throwing the country into turmoil-- made only worse by the threat of the invading Saxons. Merlin came to Arturia then, telling her that if she pulled the Sword of Selection, Caliburn, from the slab of stone it was embedded in, the British people would have no choice but to recognize her as rightful King, and that it was the means to save her homeland. If she wanted to claim her birthright and protect the country, Arturia would have to take up the responsibilities required of a ruler and throw away any hope of a normal life. Despite the magus' warning of her fate, she immediately approaches the sword and takes it without falter-- the enchantment of Caliburn stopping her aging completely and adding to the lore surrounding King Arthur.
Arthur's ten year reign begins, and she's known as a just, but distant, king that rules from Camelot. Only Merlin and a few close knights (like Kay and Lancelot) are trusted with their king's true identity; most, if not all, other subjects are either fooled by her young, slightly boyish appearance or could not say anything of her gender because of the perfect results she presented. With her Knights of the Round Table established and the Saxons repelled, Arturia leads Britain into an age of peace and prosperity; though Caliburn is broken in battle, the Lady of the Lake, Vivian, soon gives Arturia her holy sword Excalibur and its blessed sheath, Avalon, that prevents her from dying so long as it is in her possession. Some years later the exposed affair between Lancelot, the kingdom's "perfect" knight, and Guinevere, and the resulting death of Gawain's brothers at Lancelot's hands, is the beginning of the mass falling out amongst the knights. Compounding this incident is the criticism Arturia begins to receive from many of her retainers at this time-- she sacrifices her own emotions and a normal life for the betterment of the country but some can only feel that King Arthur lacks humanity and thus, cannot understand his subjects. Because of these claims Arturia feels inadequacy as a ruler, though continues to hide her doubts-- ensuring the cycle.
While Arturia is at Britain's borders repelling an attack the blessed sheath of Excalibur is stolen, and upon her return to Camelot she finds the country split apart with unrest and rebellion. She attempts to calm the masses and decimate the rebel faction, but during the Battle of Camlann the traitorous knight Mordred-- a homunculus created in her likeness from her blood by Morgan-- fatally wounds her as Arthur kills him. The last remaining knight loyal to the king, Bedivere, takes the fading Arturia to a holy isle and in the forest as she lays dying, she pleads with the World to give her a chance to redo her life in exchange for her service to it as a Guardian/ Heroic Spirit. Arturia is summoned into the Saber class during the Fuyuki Grail Wars-- both the Fourth and Fifth War, something that is unheard of for Servants but possible due to Saber's unique circumstance. In the events of Fate/ Zero, the Fourth War ten years before the events of Fate/ Stay Night, she is Servant to Emiya Kiritsugu but is betrayed by him at the very last moment as he uses a Command Seal (an unbreakable order) to force her to destroy the Holy Grail. Called forth again in the Fifth to Kiritsugu's adopted son Emiya Shirou, Saber can have different development and ends depending on the route the player takes; the Fate route is the one that focuses most heavily on her and her Master, Shirou.
Master and Servant get off to a rough start, as Shirou is rather chivalrous--almost bordering on sexist at times-- and believes that girls shouldn't be using swords or fighting and Saber, who has never been considered a woman in her life, cannot understand his concerns at all; she's a King, knight and Servant before she's a woman, after all. It's only after Shirou gets knocked around a bit by other Servants that he realizes he was a bit stupid and the teamwork between the two improves. As the War continues and Shirou learns more about Saber's life as Arthur and how things played out, he begins to feel for her and hopes that she'll use the Grail to stay in this present time-- with him. However, Saber is still stuck on redoing the selection of the king and it isn't until a reality check from Shirou and learning of what the Grail truly is at the second to last day that she understands the innate wrongness of her desire. Neither she nor the Grail can be allowed to exist in this era, so she and Shirou decide to destroy it like in the last war-- forcing Saber to go back to her own time, as Servants cannot remain without the Grail. After a long and difficult fight with the other remaining Master, Kotomine Kirei, and his Servant Gilgamesh, Saber bids farewell to Shirou while professing her own love for him and returns to the moment of her dying breath, passing away content and at peace with her life finally.
ABILITIES:
Prana Burst(Static/ Innate): Saber possesses an immense amount of prana (magical energy) which she uses to reinforce and boost her attacks, up her defense and move at incredible speed (think jet propulsion). A normal weapon that is not on the level of a divine mystery can be destroyed in one blow. Saber will likely release her prana from time to time while using physical force for something without realizing, as it is a natural function for her.
Instinct(Static/ Innate): Her refined sixth sense that's close to precognition; it allows her to feel the best course to take in battle and make even previously unknown dangers aware to her, such as Caster's Rule Breaker in the Fate route and her adapting slightly to Kuzuki's "Snake" technique on the first time in the UBW route.
Excalibur-- Sword of Promised Victory(Unlockable/ Magic): A divine construction, forged by the World and the pinnacle of holy swords. It transforms the user's prana into light when released; an anti-fortress blast that scorches and rips through the surface of the Earth. A sword of light that allows for the use of Divine Spirit level thaumaturgy (magic).
It will take some memory jogs/ crystal for her to recall enough about the sword she was given for Saber to be able materialize it of her own will. But since Saber can call Excalibur to her, with her instinct of combat it's not unlikely that, in a time of shock or danger, she could unknowingly arm herself with it-- though it wouldn't be unsealed and would vanish again once she lost focus of her prana.
Invisible Air-- Bounded Field of the Wind King(Unlockable/ Magic): This is the unsealing of Excalibur from the prana wind sheath that surrounds the blade and makes it invisible-- the default status of the sword. Even if she figured out how to call Excalibur at will, it would take a few memory crystals to realize it wasn't just an invisible blade and to unseal the wind to reveal it.
Avalon-- The Everdistant Utopia(So very hard to unlock/ Innate/ Magic): The normal ability as a Conceptual Weapon is healing injuries and preventing aging when Saber is in possession of it-- not in the physical sense but as a part of her as a Heroic Spirit. This will be a static ability that she will not grasp until she remembers enough about her identity, and it will be a very long time before she recalls enough to be able to unlock Avalon's activation as a Noble Phantasm-- which causes it to come apart in hundreds of pieces and completely protect its user from all forms of interference, pretty much a mobile fortress. Shuts (not blocks or reflects, but shuts) out all physical interference, transliners from parallel worlds, and multidimensional (multiplanar; as far as the 6th) contact; including all of the Five Magics. A Noble Phantasm on the level of sorcery and the greatest protection in the world.
Swordsmanship(Static/ Acquired with experience and training): Saber's plain skill with a blade is nearly unparalleled-- the result of years of hard training and the wealth of battle experience she acquired commanding her kingdom's army. Very few Heroic Spirits can match her in a one-on-one melee situation. Some training and memory jogs will likely bring a chunk of it back over time.
GAME INFO
EDENSPHERE NAME: Glory.
DREAM:
Fields.
Rolling, sprawling, and extending grassland to the outlying hills. A far green country, fair, and resting in the wind and swift sunrise. It was a sight that reached to the horizon and the young girl was captivated just gazing at it; simply standing among the near knee-high grass as the breeze brushed her loose hair and swept her deep blue dress about her. She merely remained like that quietly, but she was completely content. As if she shouldn't have do anything more, this alone was so natural.
A golden land, a good land.
The sky gradually began to darken at the far off peaks though, as if waiting for her lull; somber clouds stormed, moving to intrude on this scene before her. It was... foreboding, though she couldn't really say why. She just knew she could not ignore them.
But even as the creeping black that stained the land grew, right before its path was a spot of light, flickering amidst all the dark around it-- a warmth that assuaged her unsettled senses. It shone of familiar strength, and she moved herself to attain it.
It is mine, she acknowledged. It is for me.
It was only natural, a matter of fact. There was no other; who else could go to it? She must advance to it-- that was clear enough to her. Preserve this utopia-- why wouldn't she desire to do so? Past rocks standing tall from the earth and up hills that seemed to be mountains, the small girl neither slowed nor looked back-- what was behind her was a place she could not return to if she accepted that light, but what she would gain would be so much more. This certainty spurred her forward with new pace.
Her eyes narrowed as she neared the goal set before her; the stunning brilliance that hid whatever form it radiated from threatened to overwhelm her sight. The girl pressed on in spite of this and though she could not see what she reached for, the feeling of how undeniably right it was kept her faith steady. Hand extended, and with resolve steeled and the assurance of dreams, of prayers, of victory, of glory-- the light became white and finally filled her vision and awareness completely.
JOURNAL SAMPLE:
I am not entirely sure about this situation. Being born in such a way, I cannot help but feel odd about it. Am I the only one?
Which is not to say that I am ungrateful. Surely, being aware and able to move around freely is preferable, and a privilege not granted to some, if those other... containers have people inside as well. And, being surrounded these branches in a natural setting is rather calming to me, once most of the initial nerves left. Much more agreeable than a cold, mechanical atmosphere.
So, it is not a seemingly bad place here. But despite that, I cannot seem to shake this small unsettled feeling about the very beginning.
ASPIRATIONS: Saber is naturally inclined to help others and generally look out for their well being, but she won't be out protecting rights, ensuring justice or anything like that. Mostly, Saber will have the calm existence denied to Arturia, though she'll certainly be interested in regaining her memories along the way as she'll feel slightly restless and like she has a duty-- the dream will remain a sticking point with her.
Plus, female King Arthur in a memory loss game is too good for me to pass up; what with everyone believing, and the legend saying, King Arthur was male, causing her to potentially question her own memories and what she was thinking all those years.
