“Happy anniversary, baby,” Taekwoon murmurs, and presses a gentle kiss to the bone of Eunji’s wrist. He holds her hand tenderly throughout their candlelight dinner, his eyes glimmering in the low lighting. The effect makes his whole face soft and young; it reminds Eunji of the day he’d watched her walk down the aisle. His hand trembled then, but now it’s firm.
The table next to theirs titter occasionally, murmuring their approval at them. Taekwoon doesn’t look, but Eunji knows he’s listening.
When they get back home, after she finishes her shower, Taekwoon has already curled up on his side of the bed, sound asleep. He hasn’t even gotten out of his dress shirt, merely tugged down the stifling collar Eunji insisted he wear. It's always like that between the two of them: Eunji suggests something, Taekwoon brushes it aside, eyes fixed-forever fixed-on that damn phone, Eunji insists and Taekwoon relents with an eyeroll.
They used to eat dinner while on their phones, until Eunji banned them at the table.
Once a year, on their wedding anniversary, he does the hand-holding, sweet-talking, the whole works. Wonderful stuff that make people talk and Eunji’s friends gush. Stuff she’s been missing since that damn wedding.
She got married when she was twenty-two to the kindest man she’s ever met. She was the first one out of all her friends to tie the knot, and she used to feel so proud, to be the first, to be so happy.
Sometimes, she wonders if she settled too early.
Her husband sleeps scant inches away, his breathing a gentle rhythm. It would be so easy to reach over and touch him, take his hand and place it against her cheek like he used to do. She has it all, her dream boy curled up in a graceful half-moon.
So why does it feel so lonely?
