She wakes up and feels that everything hurts. But the pain takes a step back and lets fear take center stage when she opens her eyes and sees nothing but endless darkness.
She tries to get up on her own two feet but she slips, wobbles, and crashes down hard. She groans when she hits something face first but again, the pain is secondary when she realizes what she’s hit.
An orb.
A dull orb… and something seems to be moving inside.
She brings it closer to face and sees herself dancing. There’s a pink plastic crown atop her head and she’s wearing an equally pink dress as she twirls. Right by her side is a girl of the same age, her own plastic crown atop her dark hair.
“Taeyeon…” She whispers. “Kim Taeyeon…”
It’s when it hits. She’s holding on to a memory.
It happens with no warning then. One minute, she’s holding something with weight, both physically and in meaning. The next minute, she’s left wondering why the orb feels different - almost like she’s holding a feather instead of a memory - and she gasps when she begins to see it even in the dark.
Part by part, piece by piece, the orb was disintegrating, breaking away from the whole into tiny little fragments that float up and up and up even more until they fade into the darkness.
“No…” She whispers in horror as she reaches out a hand in an attempt to catch them before they fly away but the fragments merely brush against her skin before going on their way.
The orb is gone, replaced by a nothingness she can’t hold between her hands.
She’s afraid. Oh so afraid. And she trembles when she catches sight of her right hand disappear in a blink of an eye. She blinks again. It’s there once more. She rubs her eyes until she’s content that they’re working just fine and looks at her hand again. It’s still there. But the fear is raw and genuine this time and it grips her by the throat. Because she knows why this is happening. She knows why the orb disappeared.
Kim Taeyeon is beginning to forget about her.
“No…” She whispers again and the panic bubbles in her throat when she sees another orb beginning to fade from the corner of her eye. “No!”
She runs. She trips and slides but she still runs to the fading orb and with a leap, grabs it with both her hands. It’s a memory of the two of them, pretend playing. They both have toy microphones in their hands and Taeyeon is smiling oh so brilliantly. But the orb is fading and her face is gone and it’s with a sob that she hugs it closer to her chest, hoping that it’ll keep the orb safe. But the fragments continue to fly off like flecks of dust that are to be one with the air.
She can’t believe this. She doesn’t want to believe this. It’s not possible that Taeyeon can forget about her.
She wails and runs, picking up every orb that has them both in it. Their first day of school. Their first recital. Taeyeon’s birthday party that she helped decorate. She picks up more and more but there’s not enough space in her arms for every memory and they spill out of her grasp, falling back into the darkness until she’s holding on to only one.
She hears no sound but she can read Taeyeon’s lips as she spoke the words in the memory. Kim Taeyeon. Jessica Jung. Best friends forever.
The orb begins to fade a moment later and she weeps long and hard and loud. She feels hollow inside.
“Best friends forever.” She whispers. “Forever.”
She doesn’t notice her hand’s now gone.
