Celebration!

Did anyone by any chance see "Good Morning, America" this morning (Friday)?  Because if you did, you might have seen the feature about the Sheldrick Wildlife Trust, the people who raise the orphaned baby elephants.  And guess what?  MY FOSTER DAUGHTER WAS ON THE REPORT!  I was so excited when Dr. Sheldrick introduced my little Lesanju, and we ( Read more... )

--"And the Band Played Waltzing Matilda." Love that song... have you heard the even more stunning anti-war song "I Was Only 29" by Australian 80s group Redgum?

Nope. I just happened to run into this recording while searching for "The Man From Snowy River," the movie, looking for the soundtrack. I'm really not that familiar with most Aussie music other than the little that filters into my ears over here--not a lot, because I don't listen to any kind of popular music station other than a little country/western. I happen to know "And the Band Played Waltzing Matilda" because I used to go to some science fiction/fantasy based folk music parties that we called "filk sings" on a semi-organized basis, and one of the more dedicated folk music mavens brought that song to us. It was a guaranteed hankie-grabber whenever we sang it. That one, and "Green Fields of France." What is it about WWI that brings on the sad songs about tragic losses, and the futility of "the war to end all wars?"

Maybe I should look around for some more good stuff. I don't know if Itunes would have Redgum, but they have some surprising resources so I can look....

Does iTunes carry classical music? I've never been able to figure that out. They always seem to refer to music as 'tunes,' and to me, something like Beethoven's Fifth isn't a mere 'tune.'

Okay, so I'm a shameless music snob. (g)

Sure, they have classical music. I think they have about every genre out there of recorded entertainment, including books, videos, etc. Getting an account is free, as long as your computer can handle the software, and most halfway up to date systems should be able to. You pay for the music by the song or by the album, and the prices are reasonable.

Kris--Re hirsutism--I have the same thing. I have to shave every couple of days, just like a guy. It only grows on my face, though, not on my neck. But I do get a beard and moustache 5 o'clock shadowafter a couple of days. Bleah. Oddly enough, though, part of my left shin has gone bald. Go figure.

Hirsutism really isn't that uncommon, it's just that most women won't talk about it. My mother had the same problem so I come by it honestly. A friend of mine who is Japanese-American grows a pretty substantial mustache, too, although I've never noticed a beard. I guess there are ways of doing permanent hair removal, but I never figured they were worth the pain and expense when razors are cheap and effective.
