I have a major problem. :(
On Friday, I left work thinking everything was normal. On Monday, around noon, Cheryl (the Front Desk person who trained me last week) called asking if I had made my drop. I realized that I had left it in the drawer. It is missing. Cheryl said she thought I dropped it, and didn't check. Cynthia, who relieved us, said she never saw it. In fact, she made a written statement about it that I left before she finished counting the drawer. That is totally untrue. I saw her count it, then shut the drawer and step away before I clocked out. She even signed the logbook that she had seen someone drop the money. It was around $600. :( I am so upset. I cannot believe this is happening. At my first hotel job, I was accused of taking a drop, and it turned out that the General Manager was embezzling money to feed his meth habit. The manager of this hotel is out of town until next Monday. Cheryl said this has never happened in the time she's been at the hotel, but at the other one owned by the same people, the clerks were given the opportunity to pay back the money and not lose their jobs. Devin says that he believes that may be illegal. I don't think I should have to pay for someone else's theft. I know it was my responsibility to drop it, but, out of the five days I was there last week, I actually made the drop once. Cheryl did it every other time. I thought she'd do it this time as well and she was still there when I left. She was the person training me, so she should have checked the drawer or asked, I should have dropped it, and Cynthia should not have signed that she saw it dropped if she didn't. *sigh* It is such a mess. To top it off, I found out that the camera is on a 24 hour loop, recording over the same tape every day. Since the problem wasn't found until Monday, the tape had already been recorded over. Cheryl called the police and made a report today. There will be an investigator contacting me soon. I am not afraid because I know I didn't do anything wrong, but I am worried that, since I am the newest person and this happened during my first week, they'll try to pin this on me, or it will hang over my head the whole time I am at this job.
Cynthia also made a note in the log book that a guest stated that I, by name, had told him he could write a check. I haven't talked to a single guest about checks. The only experience I have with that is when Cheryl told me, "We don't take checks." Which, if I had talked to a guest about a check, is what I would have told them. Jennifer (another clerk) said that when Cynthia told her about the situation with the guest, my name wasn't mentioned at all. I wonder if she's saying that now to try to make me look bad. I'm pretty worried about it, since I will be working on Thursday and Friday with Cynthia.
Anyhow, I made typed up my statement, which included everything I knew about the situation, who had access to the drawer, etc.
