My mum used to get daphnia to clear the water in our pond, but googling daphnia suggests they are there to be fish food - I'm not sure what happens if you have daphnia to clear the algae but nothing higher in the food chain. Maybe go to a decent garden centre and ask?

You want barley straw logs - you can get them from the garden centre or from ebay. They are a miracle thing! Our pond went from bright green to clear in a week once we put one in!

You can also buy pond snails by post(!) or from your local garden centre.
