[public] Shopping for raincoats

Jun 23, 2016 10:54

This thundery weather means I've finally had enough of either going out without a coat and getting soaked by the rain or going out with a coat and getting soaked in sweat: I need a lightweight raincoat for dog walking and horse wrangling (I already have one for smart, but don't want to wreck it). Something like a pack-a-mac but with a thin lining ( Read more... )

Something cycling-aimed might work? They're usually lightweight and well-ventilated (mine has zips under the arms to increase throughput when needed) and have a mesh or lightweight lining for the same reason, and they usually don't have hoods because helmets. They are usually a bit dayglo, though...

Oh, good idea! Ta!

I'm not sure I could face dayglo, though. Black's a possibility....

Have you tried a camping or a sports shop? My great lost-property-box-at-work find was a waterproof layer which originally came from a camping shop and although it isn't ideal for sustained heavy rain it does a really good job for a shower or the damp misty stuff that clings. It originally came from a camping shop and squashes up into the size of a large pencil case.

I always find that walking/camping ones feel really horrible on bare arms when they're wet, though!

My Trespass one is black but has removable hood and has a decent lining - breathable, and not clammy-feeling even when the coat is really truly soaked (I spent 45 mins out in a torrential downpour - thunder and lightning and no sensible place to stop for shelter! - and my clothes under it were damp but not wet when I got back).

(I think it's this one but it's hard to be sure, as I've had it about 18m now. My son has one from one of their outlet stores that is similar and a little older, too. The women's styles are nice and come in more colours, but when I bought it I needed a bigger size - now not an issue but I'm not going to bother getting a smaller one!)

Thanks for the tip: I'll have to check if they have a store in our local outlet place!

I got one from Uniqlo, I don't think my exact one is in stock anymore but a friend also uses one from there on his daily cycling commute - and we're both in rainy Liverpool :)
