Ouch. If you need help recovering the text from that file, just say the word. I've got some experience with this kind of thing, actually... and depending on the original format (doc or odf), Notepadding it may or may not be the way to go.

OK, so basically you've got two main formats: DOC and ODF. DOCs are text with binary line noise in it to add formatting and features. Notepad will let you pull out some stuff, although there are programs (such as "strings" - yes, that's the program name) to automatically scrape anything that looks like real words. ODFs, on the other hand, are actually ZIP files with a bunch of XML documents stored inside them. This means that if they're corrupted, your best bet is to rename it as a .zip and use a ZIP recovery program. Again, there's a free Linux command to do this (zip -FF [filename]) but Windows tools are somewhat harder to find and usually cost money.

I'd ask if you could send me the corrupted file to play with, but since I'm in the game it pertains to I'm not sure that would be workable. :/

I don't know. It's some sort of vile curse, I think. Though in this case I think the blame is with OpenOffice, as Flagg himself has been running beautifully with no issues.

Unfortunately, System Restore only tracks configuration, what programs are installed, and that kind of thing. It won't do anything for normal files. :(

OMG *hugs on you and prays for file recovery* You are taking it much better than I. (I suggest you start uploading things to Google Doc's not only does it store them but you can pull things up anywhere and work one them in a MS word like program)

I hope things get better and I love the dress ^_~

So far, no luck. I'm pretty much resigned to just starting over. I'm surprised at how calm I'm taking it myself! Yeah, I've heard great things about Google docs, but I've had serious issues with my Gmail. :/
