Not to turn all old codger on you, but this is only the beginning. To quote the cliche, I have shoes older than you [seriously; I do].
Looking back, I realize that my life completely changed every ten years or so. I'm betting yours will too.
It sounds like you have important and interesting goals and I hope you achieve them. Maybe some of the technology you develop will help me after I retire.
Let's check back in ten years or so and see :)
For now, enjoy the day. Eat cake. Get presents. Don't worry about making an impression on the world. If you live honestly and purposefully, two decades from now, you'll suddenly realize that you affected all kinds of folks' lives without even trying.

theladyrose, listen to st_crispins. She's one of the most consistently wise and smart people I know, and I don't tell her that as I should. But there. Just so you know.
It's so, so good to hear from you. You've been sorely missed! I do hope you'll take a moment to congratulate yourself for all you've accomplished and all you're doing now (very impressive). As always, I wish you the very best with your plans/goals, even though you don't need those wishes. ;) You're an inspiration, and you're just getting started.

Thanks for your kind words - it helps to have friends who are inspirational, and I have much respect for educators who are able to put up with people my age :P I've been meaning to comment on the amazing Sherlock fics you've written - catching up and reading all of them is a gift in and of itself :)

Well, I may be a bit old for it, but I do understand young people's desire for immediate results - and for recognition now for what they're doing, rather than the hope of looking back one day and seeing it mattered. I have faith that you're finding and will continue to find a balance between investing in your path in the long term and finding enough short-term satisfaction to satisfy. It's truly amazing, the kind of revolution you're helping to lead, creating the opportunity for people to age in their own homes with dignity. I admire that tremendously.
And oh, bless your heart, you are so kind to read my little fics. That puts a huge smile on my face. Thank you.
It's so good to hear from you! I signed in to LJ so I could wish you a Happy Birthday, and here you are:)
I'm thrilled to hear how things are going for you personally and professionally. And add me to your future client list along with St.Crispins. I'm smiling, thinking where I was at age 23, and now I'm smiling more, remembering what an exciting time of life that was. You've worked so hard. I'm confident you'll achieve whatever you set your sights on!
Thank you for the birthday wishes! I don't think you'll need the kinds of things I've been tinkering with for a very long time. Just got John le Carre's latest book and thought of you :)
It's wonderful to hear from you and to know that your life is so full of excitements and achievements (and to know that the fiery redhead is still part of it all). Pretentious yuppie moron or not, you definitely deserve the occasional chance to express pride in yourself, and my goodness, what a lot you have to be proud about.
Talking to you about the disparity between investment in medical research and investment in access and coping technologies was an eye-opener - I still tell people about that conversation, it had such an impact - and I'm more pleased than I can say that you've developed to the point where you can start using your ideas to, if I may briefly be cliched and sentimental - make the world a better place.
I hope life with redhead in Seattle is better than you could possibly have expected, and that you finally get some breathing space to start integrating all those selves :-)
You just made my day - there's certainly a lot to be said for research, but actually translating that to what people can do in actual life outside the lab. Admittedly I still have a long way to go, but it is really encouraging to see that there are a lot of people building up that capacity for accessibility in the home and community.
Up in Seattle there's a good chance that Mr. Lady Rose (wow, that sounds like a terrible satirical fanfic name) will be hosting and roping me into Dungeons and Dragons so I can try the whole role playing thing :P
I think I have you to blame for a mild obsession with Viennese hot chocolate :) My mother and I will be visiting Vienna in about a month and will definitely have to stop by that cafe again! I'm afraid I've already forgotten the name - was it the Kepler Cafe?
