WTF, Publishing? (again)

The mystery genre has come a long way from the vaunted tradition of Conan Doyle and Christie. The paperback mass market seems to have distilled them into two distinct camps. The first is hardcore sensational thrillers with black and white covers, full of ominous shadows and the occasional splash of police tape or blood, that promise a world of ( Read more... )

Cat owners past and present have an undying irrational love for the fuzzy little buggers, probably on account of that bacteria in their poo that exists just to make you want to get more of them. And in case your cat saturation levels are not high enough, here are mysteries in which a spunky heroine fights crime with her feline pal. Or maybe her feline pal does it for her. Now that I think about it, the cat poo theory probably explains how these books get written.

!! Glorious.

I really want to know what's going on with Through a Glass, Deadly: A Glassblowing Mystery. Glassblowing doesn't strike me as a casual hobby the way the other hobbies or whatever are.

I can even sort of explain that one book of stories of women who fall in love with shapeshifting lions.

... now you have to tell me about it.

P.S. Are you a G.K. Chesterton fan?? I just saw your new sidebar quote! Ooh, that takes me back - it's been a while since I read GKC.

Alas, I'm not. I just found the quote and loved it, because it's true. You're never truly in love until you feel like heaving a couch at someone.

Nevertheless, I am so pleased you have the quote up. It's from GKC's book on Dickens... do I ever agree with Chesterton on Dickens's treatment of Dora in David Copperfield!

Through a Glass, Deadly is especially interesting because it's also a Biblical reference. Is it intended to be recognized? Does it have some deeper meaning, or is it just a pun? Hmmmmmm.

And the sad thing about it is that I think it's totally wasted. I don't think anyone went for the Biblical reference, they just went "glass pun, hur hur" and stuck it on there. There's another upcoming in the series called Pane of Death, which makes me think they just go for the puns any way they can.

Is it a glassblowing-murder sequel to Through a Glass, Deadly?
