prevailing on my girl friends

Now that I'm turning 25 I've started to take a little more interest in style (when I'm not thinking about Batman) so I decided to take my dear friend Rose up on her suggestion of going to a makeup counter and asking for a lesson in basic makeup application ( Read more... )

I don't think there's a good way to cut costs. There is cheap make-up, but it's cheap because it's crappy and not worth it.

That said, I recommend The Body Shop. Almost all their make-up has marula oil, which is a pretty gentle moisturizer. The brushes-which are quite pricey-are amazing. And they have a lot of pretty/shimmery colors that are not overpowering.

Also, the discount card is a good deal if you shop there regularly.

Sephora would be my second choice.

I would also suggest looking for an image consultant who determines colour seasons and clothing image style, and learning how to create your best wardrobe. This can also be done with books ( Color Me Beautiful is still considered one of the best, even though the photos are laughably dated, the information is timeless) but some people find it easier to determine their season with the help of a consultant. This gives a life-long advantage in buying clothes and make-up as you end up buying only what works, with full confidence that it will work with the rest of your wardrobe and will look good on you. If you learn to think in terms of wardrobe 'capsules', you can end up doing a lot more with a lot less, and thus get the maximum power out of every clothing purchase. Give it some serious thought, it pays off for life.

Sounds complicated. >_< It's not like I couldn't use it, though, and it's sounds like the thing I've been looking for. I'm really not sure what to do with myself style-wise and would like to learn. I'll certainly give it serious thought.

Oh wait! They have a colormebeautiful.com. I appear to be an Autumn. Now to spend the rest of the day exploring. *disappears into intartoobz*

If you send me a photo, sans makeup and glasses, and in a neutral clothing, I can confirm. I used to be an image consultant and learned how to 'season' people fairly accurately. Imaging people takes a little more effort but even that is fairly easy to determine; teaching parameters is the 'tricky' part *LOL* It sounds complicated at first, but it actually simplifies life. It's a skill and like learning any skill, it seems complicated at first but very quickly becomes natural and then automatic.

I went to a Sephora once, to have a session or whatever it was called. It was for a fashion show I was in for the Torrid I used to work at ( ... )

I went to Sephora when I was in NYC last month and had no problems there. And I asked them how to put on make-up, and they showed me.

I went to Bobbi Brown, myself, but that tends to be a bit more on the expensive side.

One thing to be warned about, though, is that they won't force you to buy stuff - they can't, really - but they'll definitely try to pressure you into buying EVERYTHING you try. You have to be ready and able to stand firm and just get what you want (which may be everything, but also may not be).
