Of Teen Magazines

To all women who are reading this, I have questions, and it’d be nice if you could answer these for yourself, or let me hear your opinions on this subject.

Why do you see yourself in the middle of magazine pages? Seriously though, why do you see a reflection of your body on the glossy pages of corporate toilet paper. Why? It’s always amazed me ( Read more... )

I do often wonder what it would be like if the girls were not seen as "perfect" and if they were just "normal" in the eyes of today's youth. Of course on the other side of the issue, do girls enjoy looking at girls who "look better" than them to get a sense of encouragement that they too can look that pretty. It could be an issue of motivation. I don't think that girls enjoy looking at other girls who "look better" than them, but that could be on SOMEONE'S mind. An interesting thought, one which i cannot grasp ahold of because i, though some may think otherwise, am not a girl.

It could be a sense of motivation, yes, but I don't believe that's what its all about. I agree with the "Sheesh" anonymous writer that replied below this, I think it may actually be a sub-conscious (or very conscious -- which is scary) desire to be validated as a real female by a male. Sad as this is, it proves just how well the corporate media agenda has manipulated our generations's minds to be the living fulfillment of a chauvanist mindset. As you undoubtably know, the media holds strong influence over our minds and lives. This has been best shown through the controlling of gender roles on our screens and in our magazines, brought to us by Stupid White Men in office. The only question now is, can women realize this enough as to not be controlled by it anymore? I believe they can, but beyond that, can people in general fight to equalize the gender roles that we see on magazine pages today? I also believe they we can do this, but it takes more than talking about it on this page.

Boy, I think you may be a feminist. Rock on.
It's a cycle. Buy the magazine, buy the product, get the look. But next month a new look comes out and you have to buy more stuff. It's all about money. Women are consumers, nothing more then a source of some fashionista fuckers' riches. I'm fucking sick and tired of "I'm not physically perfect so no one will love meeeee. I need a man to validate my existence." Am I the only one that wants to puke on someone's shoes whenever I hear those?

thank you mike bassclefpassion June 22 2004, 16:36:33 UTC
Do you know how great it is to hear that from a guy? Us girls get so crazy about "omg that guy must like me cause i'm skinny as a twig"... yeah, all those beautiful women from the 50's aren't anorexic. I was just walking downtown people watching...america is full of anorexic and obese people. not all of them, but just a scary amount. thanks for posting that mike, it needed to be said. you also put it so eloquently (I can't spell, sorry).

well my dear wamvic June 26 2004, 23:29:32 UTC
ok Mike.. ich.. I don't think I have ever heard you be so... wait never mind. This whole thing is about attention. I'm not saying all girls are like this, but look at it this way. ALL GIRLS LIKE ATTENTION! and even if you say you don't, you do. I do and dear lord if you've seen me, I'm not the size zero corporate expectation and I'm not the sterotypical beauty queen. I am pretty in my own way.. ish.. but honestly, everyone loves attention. i know when I get a "look" (and you know what I'm talking about) from someone you don't know, you get all giddy because you think they think you're hot. I mean, personally, I don't compare myself to anyone because I know that people see me differently than I see myself. Like, I could be dressed in the weirdest clothes and with makeup all around my eyes to make it look like I have a black eye or something, and someone is going to say to me "you look sexy." Of course I'm goin to be totally flattered, but then later I'll go look in the mirror to see what the hell he's talking about, and I'll ( ... )

wamvic's got a point..as does luna...as does bahunga...as do you.
you bring up a debatable point and an extremely pointed discussion topic...the thought that (a) you have to look a certain way for certain people to please them or establish yourself as something or (b) that you shouldn't be yourself is wrong.
who agrees with me that you mostly notice the people that bring something different to the table? yes, you do see the long-legged blonde bombshell walk past in a miniskirt and a bikini top, but what do you know about her? shes just another cookie cut of the idea of perfection or the thought of what you are supposed to lok like...you see only what she wears and what does that say?
