[She laughs.] I'm not sure he could pull it off.

He would never even try, but it's fun to think about.

It is! [She pulls out the pattern and some yarn. She shows him the pattern.] We should be able to maidfy this for an arm band.

*He turns his head this way and that, and the shrugs.* I don't know how to read this at all.

Okay. Watch me. [She takes the hook and the yarn and starts it.]

Wait, do that again, slowly. *Bolly pulls out his journal so he can scribble notes.* I think I see what you're doing. And then you repeat that until you have, like, kind of like a chain? And that's the bottom edge, here on the pattern thingy?

Yeah. [She does it again, slowly.] That the bottom edge, yeah.

Okay, I think that makes sense. *He examines the crochet hook, and then the yarn.* So I do a knot and then... Hmm. Through like- Oh, no, through like this. And then one, two, three, and through again. Oh, hey, it worked!

Yay! You picked it up fast!

It's not hard when you get in the groove.

*Bolly tries to speed up and then immediately has to slow down again when he accidentally pulls too tight and it messes up his next stitch.* I guess you get faster with practice.

Yup. Slow and steady while you're learning. I've just started being able to faster.

Yours comes out way more even than mine. *He counts the links in his chain, and writes it down, then counts the stitches on the pattern.* A wristband is about a quarter of a headband, right? What does this bit mean, where it goes to the next row?

Reply

thenextbigdeal April 29 2024, 21:50:45 UTC
Yeah, a quarter sounds right? [She looks where he's pointing and nods.] That's right.

So I need to do the same thing but, like, up, somehow?

Here watch. [She showed him how to move up a row. It's hard for her to explain and luckily Bolly seems to learn well by watching.]
