ladies and gentlemen...

...if i can offer you one piece of advice for the future, it would be this: expect unlikely friendships.
it may be with your boss, who takes pictures of you at the bar with people you barely know, who listens to you whine about the relationships you have that are going nowhere, who talks to you about grownup things when you're anything but, who writes you letters of reccommendation simply because she believes in you. it may be with a friend you knew from high school but never talked to much, but who went out on a limb for you to get you a job--just because they had faith in you--who gets you water when you've had too much to drink, and who tells you that everyone's got insecurities, no matter how well they hide it. or it may be with someone you never knew before starting work, who sits at the bar and tells you stories about their niece until your faith in humanity is restored, who offers to walk when they know the car is full, and who makes sure you're ok to go, then tells you they'll see you tomorrow and to make sure to take aspirin. if i can give you one piece of advice, it would be this: the people you meet will be the people who shape your future--your lives--your dreams. these people will often surprise you with their depth, their verve, and their generosity, and when they do, make sure to tell them that you appreciate it--because they deserve to hear it.
post coming tomorrow about sal's christmas party.
