I'm back on my PC! Hooray!
Kind of worrying how dependant I am on this thing. Hmmm, oh well. Nevermind!
Something I decided to do when I got this PC back was to upload some
music to share through my livejournal of a band I feel more people need
to hear. And for those bothered enough to click to read more of my
journal ... congratulations, as you have access to a WHOLE album! But
(there had to be a but) I do expect decent comments on it after you've
listened so I know if it's worth my while to do something similar again
in the future.
The band I've chosen to start things off is Sunna, and their only released album titled One Minute Science in 2000. I've
be a fan of this band for a few years but never really had the
opportunity to plug them to that many people. The following was taken
in part from a review of the album I quite like, as well as some of my
own ramblings about this 'must hear' band.
As long as music exists it will remain one of the biggest crimes ever
committed that Sunna were dropped after this album. Finally a British
Metal band that had talent, diversity, innovation and most importantly,
great songs in their repertoire, shortly after the release of this
album they supported A Perfect Circle on their first global tour, won a
shitload of critical acclaim and emerged as the great British hope for
Metal in the Millenium. Then Massive Attack’s Melankolic label dropped
them after they finished recording their second album, which is yet to
be released (it's sitting in Melankolic's vault somewhere due to
publishing rights or some such nonsense. The only thing I know about
this 2nd album is one of the tracks, possibly called 'Spider', was
meant to be a part of the first Spider-man film's soundtrack, but this
was before they were dropped by the label. Interesting bit of trivia -
this was not the first time a track of theirs was going to be tied to a
movie; their song Power Struggle featured in the Movie "Hollowman" starring Kevin Bacon.)
Unfortunately the quandary for bands these days is no
matter how good you are, selling records is what counts, especially if
you’re a British band. Singer and songwriter Jon Harris played guitar
on Massive Attack’s “Mezzanine” album and they subsequently signed him
to their label when they realised they had more than a mere session
player on their hands. If only they’d kept him for a second album,
because on the evidence of this, “One Minute Science” is one of the
best British Metal records in the last 20 years.
Diversity and variation are Sunna’s forte and no track sounds the same,
and those expecting lightning fast solos and power ballads should look
elsewhere. Sunna employ everything from diverse FX pedals and
electronic overdubs to string quartets and drum looping to ensure an
album that is incredibly interesting and impressive listening every
time it’s played.
The whole record is a distorted journey pioneered by the whole band, an
initially seemingly uneven fusion of Industrial stylings in the form of
the drum looping and electronic overdubs, and the juxtaposition of
sprawling riffs and hammering drums found in Heavy Metal, all
underpinned by a tortured soul to rival Trent Reznor in Harris, a man
capable of soulful vocals and aggressive yet humble lyricism.
In my humble opinion, if Kurt Cobain were still with us and decided to
do a project with Trent Reznor back in 2000, I could only hope that it
would sound as good as this. As well as MP3s of the album, I have also
put on a couple of rare Sunna songs "Guinea Pig People" and "Weather
Controller", which were only released as b-sides to the Power Struggle
single. Right click and Save Target / Link to download. Enjoy!
