I recieved a response from the currator at the Met in answer to some questions I sent her a while back about the embroidered Elizabethan Stockings I've been researching...
Oh boy Oh boy Oh boy...
She answered my questions AND sent me new unpublished pictures!!!  three of the BACK!!!
Oh geeky heaven!
(bounces off to explore her treasures more....)

oh, and yes, it's complete start over on the reproduction... none of the satin stitches were padded at all! It only looks that way in the published photos because the thread was pulled tightly in the satin stitches enough to bunch the fabric a bit.
Holy cow!
Good thing I traced out two full stocking tops in the beginning when I started this project :-)
