I just enrolled at Laney College (the Oakland community college in the East Bay wide Peralta CC system) for the Fall '07 semester! Why, you may ask? I'm going back to school, at least one class at a time, to get back into the language learning scene. My latest challenge? Mandarin Chinese! Ah yes, the language learning scene. I can just imagine underground places full of laanguage learners, sharing tips and talking about the latest developments in language. I want to go and learn French. I know the basics, but want to improve for when I take over. Knowing the native language usually helps with that kind of thing.

Wow, yeah, I expect that will be difficult. Tones and all. Any particular reason you chose Mandarin?

I expect the tones will be murderously tough! I chose Mandarin because I couldn't find a Portuguese class at one of the local community colleges, I wanted a break/challenge from the romance languages I've previously studied, and I've always been super interested in China. They also offer Cantonese, but I figured I'd rather learn the "standard".
