Give him some tylenol - both of you will be happier. I know you guys aren't really keen on giving him drugs, but there comes a point where you have to prioritize things - driving you both insane isn't doing anyone any favours.

I just phone the doctor to ask about Orajel and if we should use it. He hasn't phoned back yet.My mother-in-law said her mother said, whisky was used when she was a little girl so a hundred years ago. :/
We used orajel, though my suggestion is to use a fingertip (as opposed to a q-tip) for greater control and make sure you just get it on the gums - LB went crazy the first time it got on his tongue - just completely freaked him out.
The whiskey thing works on more or less the same principle - a little on the finger and massage the gums - acts as an anesthetic.
