Let me just add that I'm treating you like an adult, and trying to talk straight up with you. Don't take the above as talking down or anything, just trying to challenge you. :)
While I agree if a kid won't do the whole religion thing, straight edge is better than nothing, but I kind of doubt it has much influence on opening a door to christianity. I think it's more of wanting to belong to a group and feel accepted (or to feel like you're rebelling and are NOT accepted). I believed the same things you did when I was 17, but I never called myself straight edge. I'm sure thousands of teenagers believe the same thing...they just don't need the label of "straight edge." I think the same is true of vegans/vegetarians. While yes there is a set of beliefs that is unique, there is also a huge cultural aspect that goes along with it. You're not just believing something by yourself, but instead you're in a group of like-minded people that accept you
