Title: A Birthday Surprise

Rating: G

Summary: It's Will's Birthday and there's a surprise

Just fluff and more fluff!

Emma spent the afternoon cleaning the kitchen and refrigerator. It was a warm summer day so the air conditioning was on blast and she found herself humming along to the music she had playing in the living room. Will had taken Sophie out for ice cream and to play on the playground which gave Emma free reign of spreading out everything without fear it would get all unorganized.

When the fridge was all put back together and all the pots and pans in their proper, organized places in the cupboards below, the door opened and Sophie came rushing in, a balloon in hand. “Mommy, I won a balloon!”

Emma gently picked her up and gave her a kiss. Will followed behind and kissed her on the cheek. “We went to the store and bought a Elmo balloon.”

She eyed him playfully and put Sophie down, letting her run into the living room. Emma quickly grabbed a paper towel and wet it. Will noticed and chuckled. “She’s all clean Em, I used six wipes on her hands, face, legs and arms.” She smiled and walked over to Sophie who was watching her balloon.

“Sophie come here please, Mommy is going to take your shoes off and wash your face one more time. Then you can watch Bert ok?”

Sophie excited and happy came right over as Emma gently wiped her face down, noticing her hair falling in her eyes. Emma laughed and tried to place her hair on top of her head while Will put in a Sesame Street DVD.

When the movie started playing and Emma got her shoes off, Sophie nicely placed herself on the couch, lying out. Both of them laughed as they watched her for a moment and then they walked back into the kitchen where Emma pulled out a cup and some juice.

“You spoil her.”

Will laughed and poured the juice. “Of course I do.”

Will brought the juice to her where Sophie thanked him and then went back to watching the TV.

“So I was thinking for your birthday tomorrow we could drop Sophie at your mom’s and I will make dinner?”

He smiled and followed her to the bedroom.

“Sounds good but you don’t know I don’t want a fuss.”

She threw some clothes in the laundry basket as he stripped his own t-shirt. “No fuss. Just a nice dinner.”

She looked up and felt her mouth go dry as she looked him over. Even after a year of marriage and a toddler he never lost his physique. Gently she lifted the basket and watched as he pulled on another t-shirt wishing that Sophie wasn’t around, but she would get her alone time tomorrow. He didn’t notice her staring as he picked up his glasses and went to the bathroom.

“You spoil me.”

She giggled and watched as he took his contacts out in the doorway. “Just you wait.”

He threw his glasses on and walked over to her, smiling wide. “Cannot wait.”

He kissed her hard for a short time and walked down the hall to join Sophie.

Her first surprise on his birthday was a letter she wrote and left for him that morning before she went for a run. It was something she loved to do once she discovered it in therapy. Before the air would get really hot and she could just be alone with her thoughts and her music.

When she returned Will kissed her soundly with Sophie watching.

“Mommy, Daddy, cersal?” They laughed and poured her some Chex while they stole kisses.

The next surprise was Sophie made a drawing. Emma framed her two hands that she traced a few weeks before to which Sophie colored in. (Well, tried to, it was a lot of colors with lots of lines everywhere). But it was perfect and Will gave them a kiss on the cheek while he ate his Cherrios.

Will took Sophie to the grocery store while Emma did laundry and made desert for their dinner tonight. Will’s mother called and they decided that Sophie would spend most of the evening over there.

The two of them returned with a few treats but also vegetables, fruit and chicken. Emma had made an appointment so she left to the two of them napping on the sofa after they both had lunch, kissing their foreheads and a note that she would be back soon.

Emma entered the doctor’s office a little nervous. She took a seat, filled out some paperwork and waited for her name to be called. When it was, she walked in and sat on the table, answering questions and hoping that everything would go all right.

When she left the office she had papers and pictures and lots of information she had to go over. It was overwhelming.

The house was quiet when she returned just a little bit later. The TV wasn’t running and when she looked over on the sofa, they were still sleeping, with Sophie on top of Will, her little hands resting on his chest and Will had his hands gently wrapped around her waist. Emma watched the scene for some time as she let the tears form in her eyes.

Quietly she changed into her old clothes, filed her papers away and then started to work on Will’s special dinner, which wasn’t much more then chicken and rice but it was his favorite so she wasn’t going to complain.

The phone rang a little bit later which woke the two of them. Will arose, shaking the kinks out and then gently carrying Sophie who was a bit upset at waking up so unnaturally. The two of them exchanged a smile as he carried her to her room.

Will’s mother showed up a little while later and Emma let her in.

“Dear Emma, hello.”

She didn’t hug Emma but handed her a book for Sophie.

“This is for Sophie.”

Emma smiled and closed the door and led her to the living room. “Thank you. She’ll love this.”

Will entered, smiling. Will’s mother gave him a hug and looked around.

“Where’s the little one?”

He smiled and pointed down the hall. “She’s in her room, playing with Ernie and Bert. I think they are on a boat or something.”

She laughed and walked over to Emma who was putting the chicken in the oven. “She’s got quite the imagination I see.”

Emma smiled and offered her a glass of water. “Yes she does. She also knows “No” and pushes people away.”

Will’s mother scoffed and took a sip of her drink. “Please. William here would take his arm and swat it at his father. He was a very physical child. I couldn’t have another one since he was such a handful.”

Will appalled, opened his eyes wide. “You’re just being dramatic. Besides you always told me you never wanted another child.”

His mother chuckled. “Yes honey.” She turned to Emma and rolled her eyes. “You were just that special we couldn’t imagine having another.” Her voice dripping with sarcasm.

Emma laughed and washed her hands in the sink and then turned to Will. “Honey, please make sure she has her favorite bear and make sure you pack enough wipes and diapers for your mother.”

Will nodded and went back down the hall into her room. Will’s mother smiled and followed Emma into the living room as she bent down to clean up a few toys. “You’re very organized Emma, way more than I was while raising a toddler.”

Emma smiled as she ran her hand under the sofa, finding nothing but a few crumbs which caused her to make a face. His mother noticed and quickly grabbed a wipe that was on the coffee table. Emma wiped her hand and stood. “Well, it didn’t come easy. I mean we didn’t raise Sophie from the beginning so I was all ready to be organized.”

“Sure, but still, toddlers are unpredictable. But I don’t have to tell you that. At least with infants they are all dependable on you. I think that’s easier sometimes.”

Emma was about to say something when Sophie came running in with Will on her heels, bag in hand. “Granma!”

Will’s mom scooped her up and kissed her. “Hi sweetie. Ready to go over to Grandma’s and Grandpa’s?”

She nodded and they all laughed as she held tight to her Bert doll.

Sophie was put down and ran to the door, “Side? Car, car! Yes, ok!”

Will walked over to her and took her hand. “Ok, in a minute. Say goodbye to mommy ok?”

“Bye mommy, bye!”

Emma smiled and squatted down, kissing Sohie. “Be a good girl ok? I don’t want you to be climbing on the sofa or writing on tables. Crayons only on paper.”

Sophie nodded and ran back to the door. Will’s mother gave Emma and Will a hug and then took Sophie out to the car where Will placed her bag in the car and helped her mother with the car seat. Will’s mother gave Will a quick kiss and Happy Birthday as she slid into the car.

Will entered the house and closed the door sighing. “Wow, that was fun.”

Emma smiled and handed him a beer. “Your mother is sweet.”

They walked over to the sofa and sat down, Emma found herself snuggled into Will as he stroked her hair.

“I like the quiet.”

He looked down at her and smiled. “It is nice.”

They didn’t say anything for awhile until Emma decided to sit up and bring out her gift.

“Ready for your next birthday surprise?”

He eyed her curiously and then grinned. “I thought that was going to be AFTER dinner?”

She gently ribbed him and went wide-eyed. “Get your mind out of the gutter mister.”

“It is my birthday.”

She stood and walked towards the bedroom, eying him before he was out of her sight. She could hear his laughter as she entered the room which caused her to break into a small smile.

She pulled out a few things from a drawer and took a couple of breaths. She went to the closet and on tippy toes, reached in the back and pulled the box down.

As she entered the living room again she found Will still lying out, drinking his beer. “I missed you.”

She smiled and placed the items on the coffee table. She sat on the edge of the edge of the couch, her face turning more nervous which caused him to sit up and he too became nervous.

“Surprise number three.”She said with a little trepidation.

“I don’t know which one to open.” She picked up the box and handed it to him.

He eyed her for a moment, forming a small smile and gently started to remove the ribbons. The box was blue and small, wasn’t wrapped and only had the colorful ribbon to prevent it from being opened.

He took his time getting the ribbon off, bunching it up in his hands as he pulled it off. After what seemed like forever, all the ribbon was off and he pulled off the top of the box.

Emma took a breath in and out hoping he didn’t hear it and watched as he gently peeled back the tissue paper. He pulled out a Mets hat and he smiled. “Oh Em, it’s perfect.”

He put it on, folding the brim and smiling at her. “Thank you honey.”

He kissed her cheek and she pointed to the box.

“Oh, there’s more. Awesome.”

With his hat on, he got to the bottom and pulled out a smaller one, identical to the one he had. He looked at her funny. “Honey, Sophie already has a Mets hat.”

It was then he noticed it was infant sized.

He froze for a moment and then slowly turned to her. “Wait a second…”

Emma could no longer hold back the tears and with tearful eyes she nodded.

“Oh my god.” He sat frozen in place until a huge smile formed and without a word went over to her and embraced her, letting his arms settle around her middle and rest his head on her shoulder while he whispered in her ear, “Best birthday ever.”

When he pulled away his hands traveled down to her stomach where they settled, right on her belly button. He didn’t say anything but he felt the tears form and they both laughed and cried for a few minutes before Emma pulled away, smiling through the tears.

“There’s still something else to open.” He pressed his forehead to hers, wiping her tears away with his thumbs.

She blushed and wrapped her arms around him for another long time before he broke away. “Ok, ok” he said as he wiped his own tears away, not embarrassed but needing to see.

The envelope was small and he lifted the flap to see a few pictures. He pulled them out one by one and laid them down on the table. Emma scooted next to him as he looked them over.

She pointed to one. “I think that’s the head, or maybe a leg. I’m not sure.” She let out a small giggle and watched as he intently looked at each one.

As she watched him, she decided to fill him in on a few things. “I’m 13 weeks. I know, it’s kinda late and I should have known but you know, school was ending and Sophie was well being a toddler so I didn’t think much of it and of course you know how these things are so I made a appointment and I went today and I didn’t want to say anything in case and the last thing I wanted was to be wrong and I know you’re going to say -“

He cut her off by giving her a passionate kiss. When they both came up for air she leaned against him, letting her hands grab his t-shirt. He stroked her hair as he tried to find his voice. “I love you, I love Sophie and I love this child. I am so blessed.”

Through more tears, hugs and kisses, the oven timer rang. They walked to the kitchen hand and hand and they both helped each other with the dinner, Will poured water and she cut the chicken. He wrapped his arms around her middle a few more times before she prodded him to go away so she could finish. He whined, kissed the side of her neck and went to sit down.

They ate their dinner quietly as he took her hand a few times and squeezed it. Their topics ranged from school, summer, Sophie and Glee. Will was setting up some summer rehearsals for the kids and Emma was going to try to tackle her fear of dirt among other things. They made plans to take a small day trip to a amusement park and Will wanted to make sure he was around for all her doctor appointments.

When they cleaned up after dinner, they settled into the couch again, planning to watch a movie but Emma ended up laying on Will, with his hands around her stomach, gently tapping a rhythm on it. She laughed and placed her own hands on top of his, following the beat. “You know Will, he or she doesn’t have ears yet.”

Will laughed and continued. “Sure, but she’s going to be a great singer.”

She looked up. “She? Another girl?”

He smiled and kissed her forehead. “Just a feeling.”

She rubbed her stomach for a moment and took his hands, interlocking them with hers. “I’m scared Will. I know I have come so far and I shouldn’t be saying this on your birthday but I wanted you to know.”

She was afraid to look up at him so she counted in her head backwards from 100 to keep herself from going crazy and in case he didn’t respond right away. However a few seconds later she felt him sit up and bring her closer to him as he wrapped his arms tight around her. “I’m scared too. But we will get through the tough times and the hard stuff with flying colors.” He paused. “Promise me something.”

With their hands still interlocked, he looked up at him. “Anything.”

He smiled down at her, “That you tell me how you feel at anytime. I don’t care if it’s noon or if it’s three in the morning. I want to be here for you and I need for you to tell me if you’re upset, happy or just plain old sick of things. Tell me. And you can tell me I’m being an ass, that’s allowed.”

She laughed and looked at the ring on his finger. “Oh good to know.”

They sat in silence when they interrupted by a growling noise. “I think someone wants desert.”

She sat up and looked at him funny. “That was so not me.”

He laughed and stood, taking her hand, helping her up. “Whatever, I think it was clear she wants some of that cake you made.”

He took the cake out of the fridge and she took the frosting out of the cupboard and sampled a bit as peeled back the protective covering. He laughed and took a knife out of the drawer. “So it begins.”

She eyed him, confused. “What?”

“The weird stuff. I know for a fact that you would have bitten my head off if I stuck my finger in there and licked it. And I know you would never would have done that three years ago.”

She shrugged and placed the can next to him. “I feel like you are being an ass.” She said with a chuckle.

He looked offended but broke out in a small fit of chuckles. “I’m going to live regret saying you can call me that.”

She smirked and went to pull out the candles.  He frosted and then she put a few candles in as he brought it over to the small table. She lit them and went to dim the lights.

Before she started singing she went to her purse and pulled out her phone. He eyed her curiously and then watched as she opened her phone and put it on speaker. “Ok, honey, you can start singing now. Daddy’s here.”

Will heard her giggles and her mother’s voice. “Ok, Sophie, ready, 1…2…3…”

Sophie’s voice filled the room with babble and broken words as Emma tried to follow, finding it hard to follow the singing of a three year old but she tried and when the song ended and Emma clapped she spoke loudly into the phone. “Yay Sophie.” Sophie yelled back, “Yay Sophie.” The adults all laughed and Will blew out his candles, all in one shot.

“Daddy blew them all out Sophie.” Will took the phone when Emma handed it to him and walked to the table, talking about their evening. Emma took out the candles and cut the cake and watched as Will seemed so intrigued by what Sophie was telling him.

“That’s so great Sophie. So Grandpa sang you a song?”

Emma pulled out Will’s favorite ice cream and scooped a few onto his plate. She took a little herself and brought them over to the table.

“Ok, well you go and have fun. Be good.”

Emma sat down and listened to Sophie’s babbles and then love you.

Will closed the phone and placed it next to him. “You’re amazing.”

She nodded and scooped up a piece of cake. “I know.”

After desert they cleaned up once more and when everything was put away, Will extended his hand and she took it. He led her to the bedroom where he sat her down.

Curious she watched as he went into their closet, pulling out his guitar. Intrigued she watched as he pulled a chair from the corner closer to her, across from her as he sat down.

“You have given me so much and I want to do something for you. So Em, this is for you. For you are so beautiful, so wonderful, so special and so amazing. And I don’t know where I would be without you in my life. You are my angel. “

Tears in her eyes Emma watched as he started to sing, “In my Life” by the Beatles which was one of her favorite songs.

As he sang with the guitar placed her hands gently over her stomach and whispered gently. “You’re daddy is singing to you.”

Will finished, put his guitar down and gently kissed her. She embraced him fully as she pulled him down gently on the bed, increasing the intensity.

Breathless and wanting, Emma rolled so she was on top of him as she grinded her hips into him.

Taking the hint, Will’s eyes grew dark as he went to lift her shirt over her head. She fell into him, nipping at the side of his neck, whispering into his ear that she wanted him.

They spent as much as they could without the interruptions of a three year old exploring each other and whispering their love and need for each other.

When the phone rang he picked it up. Breathless and sweaty Emma propped herself on her side and tried to distract him as he talked to his mother. When he licked his chest he gently told her to stop it in his best quiet voice but she continued and he groaned into the phone which caused his mother to ask if he was ok, which caused Emma to laugh.

“Ok, mom, we’ll see you in an hour.”

When he hung up the phone he grabbed her and pulled her so she was on flat on the bed, he on top. “Totally not cool.”

She giggled and feigned innocence. When he gently rocked his naked body into hers she was silenced as he kissed her hard.

They stole a quick shower before the clock struck nine and when it came, they both emerged from the bedroom and got a glass of water waiting for the door to open and a sleeping Sophie to come in.

He kissed Emma a few more times and when they heard a knock, she whispered a love you as a barefooted Will went to the door to open it slowly. Sophie was in her pajamas, resting her head on her mother’s shoulder. Will took the bag and his mother followed Emma into her bedroom where she was gently put down in her crib.

They whispered quietly as they closed the door, keeping it slightly ajar as they walked back into the kitchen to see Will unpacking her bag.

“She was wonderful. She had her milk, I read a story and she fell asleep on the couch with her Grandpa. I took a few pictures because it was so precious.”

“Thanks Mom for watching her.” He put her cups in the sink and pulled out the blanket, throwing it over his shoulder.

“It is always a pleasure and I take it you had a nice evening?” She looked at them both and saw them both blushing.

“Maybe I’ll be hearing about another grandchild coming soon? Hmmm?” They both laughed nervously as Will gently ushered her out the door. “Maybe mom. Thanks again. I’ll call you soon,ok?”

His mother laughed and gave Emma a small hug and a kiss on her way out.

“Love you all.”

Emma waved in the doorway as Will stood on the stoop, looking out to see the skies clearing and it cooler.

Her mother drove away from the house and when she disappeared, Will turned to her, the door still open, the cool air going into the house. “Come out with me for a second.”

She did and felt his hands wrap around her as she leaned into him, standing, looking up at the night sky.

They stood there for sometime before he gently kissed the top of her head and whispered softly.

“Let’s get you two inside.”

She smiled and followed his lead inside, still gripping his hand. He closed the door and locked it and met her in the doorway of Sophie’s bedroom where she sleeping soundly, gripping her stuffed bear.

They exchanged a smile and both of them went to the bedroom where they slept wrapped in each other’s arms.
