Title: Post-It
Rating: G
Summary: Post-It's mean alot to Emma and Will
Just a random piece of Fluff I put together.
The first Post-It Will ever wrote to Emma was on her second day at McKinley. He learned she loved Post-It’s because they were small, colorful and always stayed in place even days after on a surface. When he entered her office after school that day, he found she had already placed them in various spots, looking like a rainbow in some places. She explained green was for student things, yellow was for her own use, orange was for her next day’s work and pink was her to-do list for the evening when she got home.
He smiled and when he offered his own, (plain old white) she told him that white was too bland. He laughed and left her office telling her he would see her later. By the time he got organized and headed for home, he discovered she had left. Pulling out a white Post-It, he wrote in pen, “For the girl who loves rainbows” and stuck it neatly on her door handle.
The second Post It Emma wrote to Will it was after a long staff meeting. They didn’t see each other during the day and she missed her lunch with him. When she walked to his office, Post-It written and ready to give to him, she discovered the door closed and locked. Disappointed she slid it under the door and then wiped her hands clean, not trusting the floor she touched. When Will entered his office an hour later, he looked down to see a pink square piece of paper on the floor. Smiling, he picked it up and read it. “To do list: Tell Figgins less is more. Tell Will Glee Club needs him.”
Will wrote his Post-It to Emma quickly. It was late and he needed to get home because Terri was making dinner. It had been a rough day and he lashed out at Emma at lunch telling her that she didn’t understand what he was going through when in fact she was the only one who did. They had become each other’s sounding board and while he didn’t always liked what she had to say, she was always right about it. When he placed the note under her door as she had left early he sighed and hoped she would understand.
When Emma walked into school the next morning, tired and frustrated with her argument with Will the day before she discovered a small piece of paper on the floor, almost stepping on it. Quickly she picked it up and read it, struggling to read a few words. “I’m sorry. I never meant to say those things. Please forgive me.” She of course had and when she placed the Post-It on top of all the others, she realized she always would.
Will discovered a Post-It in the choir room, on the piano. The practice had gone so well and Emma cheered the group on, telling each and every one how well they did. He left the room for a moment to gather some music from his bag and when he returned the yellow Post-It sat, on the keys. With a little hop in his step, he walked over and read it, taking his time. “Wow, so I guess you are that amazing. Go you!”
He laughed and placed it in his pocket, making a mental note that he had to remove it before he threw it in the laundry. Terri would not appreciate the note or even get it. He fingered the keys, making random music thinking that he was doing what he loved.
Emma found a piece of white paper tucked in a folder on top of her desk. It had been a normal day except for the fact that a parent complained about some advice she had given a student which led to a meeting with Principal Figgins and the student. Everything had been settled but it still rattled her and caused her to have a mini panic attack in the faculty bathroom. She opened the folder to see in big letters, “AMAZING. WONDERFUL.ALWAYS RIGHT.” And at the very bottom was a smiley face. As Emma felt the weight of the day lift a bit as she read it over and over. Instead of putting the note in the drawer, she tucked it in her calendar sleeve so she would see it all day, every day.
Will for the first time in a long time cried in his office. It was late and dark outside. His marriage was over and while Glee was going well, he felt his personal life was overshadowing his professional one. He wiped the tears away and gathered his things; tired of feeling he wasn’t enough. As he walked out to his car, and finding he was the only left. He sighed but when he reached his car he saw a bright piece of paper on his windshield which lifted his spirits slightly. He approached it and gently removed it, finding a small piece of tape kept it in its place. He clutched it in his hands as he read it, gently running his fingers along the words. “You will be ok. You will always have me. “He read it over a few times before he placed it in his bag, planning to take it out and keep it next to his nightstand.
Weeks went by and both Will and Emma became consumed with work, rarely being able to see each other due to their schedules. Will was stressed with his divorce and Glee while Emma found herself in the middle of making sure the colleges had what they needed from their accepted seniors. When they finally saw each other for more than a minute it was after another faculty meeting. Emma had to get back to her office and Will had to get to the choir room. They chatted about the meeting and general things before Emma slipped him a Post-It before he went down the hall. When Will entered the room, the note in his hand he took a few deep breaths in and out and then read it. “I miss you.” Without a second thought, he went to grab a pen and wrote.
Emma was tired and drained. She had her parents coming and she really didn’t have the strength to deal with them for the three days they were staying. She had to drive to the airport and when she looked to see she should be going, she quickly packed up her things and headed out the door. As she closed it and walked down the hall she almost collided with Will who had a stack of papers in front of him. They exchanged goodbyes quickly and before Emma could retreat from him he gently handed her a piece of paper telling her goodbye again.
As she got into her car, finding it hot and stuffy she turned on the air and before she drove off she uncurled the small piece of paper and read it, finding he added to her original note, his unmistakable handwriting under hers, “I miss you more.” With her heart beating out of her chest she clutched the note to it and tried to get her breathing under control.
It was raining when she entered school. Her parents had worn her out and she was feeling like a zombie when she sat down in her office chair, trying to organize everything she had to do. Her green Post-It’s were out so she had to use yellow which was going to throw her whole color scheme off. She had meant to order extra but things had just gotten too confusing and busy. Brushing off her somewhat wet hair, she placed it behind her ear and found it easier to just put it up, away from her face. Will knocked on the glass a few minutes later and waved hello.
By the time she got to her lunch she was knee deep in confusion over her new color scheme. Pink somehow was for students and green was for her own lists and white seemed to somehow get mixed with everything. Frustrated she tried to start over, even making a color key so she would remember. At the end of the day with everything finally back to normal and color crisis averted, she went to the faculty lunch room to get herself a cup of tea. She reached into the cabinet to get her mug when she discovered a piece of paper attached to the bottom. Curious she slowly peeled it off and looked around the room before reading it. When the coast seemed clear she read it slowly, letting her eyes linger on each word. “I saw you today looking extra beautiful.”
She blushed into the note and placed it gently in her skirt pocket, planning on taking it home and putting it on the corkboard she had on her bedroom wall.
The air was extremely stuffy as he packed his boxes. Finally Will was getting his own place, a fresh one. After spending a few weeks cleaning and painting it was time to move in. Pots and pans jingled as he made his way to his car, planning to pack it tight next to the books and sheet music. Before he did however he saw a bright orange piece of paper among the sheet music. Curious he gently lifted a stack of paper and pulled it out, curious on how he missed it before. He gently folded it and then placed the box of pots and pans in its planned place. Breathless and sweaty he took a moment as he leaned against his car, ready to read it. In the writing he knew so well he smiled. “Artist suggestions for Glee Club: U2, Bruce Springsteen. (Or is that because they are my favorites?)” He laughed and put the note in his pocket as he went to grab another box making a metal note to look up tour dates.
Emma walked into school on the last day preparing herself for water balloon fights and the halls littered with stale food and dirty clothes. She spent most of the day packing things and making sure she was all set for the next year. The faculty had a catered lunch but she chose not to join in so she would avoid the small talk and lingering looks from the staff over her relationship with Will. Will himself stayed away and when he visited her to see if she needed any help, they spoke about summer plans and he told he would escort her to her car at the end of the day so she wouldn’t get soaked by a balloon. When she returned from the bathroom after school she entered her office to discover a rainbow of color paper lining the front of her desk.
Confused and excited she took her time to approach the desk wanting to take her time in reading each one. It started from the left, judging by the first word and ended on the right edge. One word was printed on each piece of paper and by the time she reached the end, she had to catch her breath. As she pieced it all together she couldn’t believe it. “Are you free tonight for a date?”
When she turned she saw him standing in the doorway smiling. Elated she walked towards him and threw her arms around him, not caring if anyone saw, whispering yes in his ear.
At the end of their date, Emma let him in, making sure he removed his shoes. They had a glass of wine and talked about the U2 concert and danced slowly to one of her favorite songs which was not U2 related with Will found ironic. He stayed till the clock struck one as she led him to the door. He kissed her on the cheek and told her he would call her.
When Will arrived at his apartment, tired but happy he pulled out his wallet from the back of his jeans and discovered a slip of green. Smiling he opened his wallet and found her perfect handwriting in black pen. “I can’t live without you.” Gently he pulled the note off and placed it and pinned it on his dry/erase board in the small kitchenette.
Emma and Will walked the park hand in hand at dusk watching the kids play football and the parents push their children on the swings. Emma soon found herself on the swings next to Will as they talked about the future. As Will walked Emma to her apartment it was night, the moon casting a white glow all around. He kissed her hard by her doorway and Emma almost told him to come in and stay forever but held back because she didn’t want to rush anything. Will then handed her the Red Sox hat she owned and kissed her softly one more time before leaving. She watched him drive away, keeping her hand on her lips to savor the memory. As he drove out of sight she took a deep breath out and then looked down to discover a piece of yellow paper taped inside her hat. Smiling she peeled it off and unfolded it to see his handwriting, small in blue pen. “I forgive you for your Red Sox hat because you are so cute. I don’t want to spend another day without you.”
They spent every day together, going to the park, going to plays and just spending time together. Once in awhile they would leave each other notes but it was more of a To Do list nature. Emma found herself at Will’s place often leaving notes about groceries or that evening’s plans. They argued over stupid things and would make up hours later. Will’s parents would come by and they would sit and have barbeque and talk about his father’s work and his mother’s love of wine.
Emma really needed to take a shower. It was a hot day and since she spent most of the afternoon with Will reading a book on his deck, she was sweaty and uncomfortable. She entered the bathroom with a change of clothes and took her time letting the cold water run along her back and legs. When she stepped out of the shower feeling refreshed and cool, she discovered a piece of paper clinging to the mirror. She knew it hadn’t been there before as she grabbed her t-shirt and threw it over her head, ignoring the need for a bra. The scrawl was in pencil which made it hard to read from a distance so she gently removed it from the mirror conscious of the fact of her fingerprints. She almost fell back into the shower as she read the writing. “I love you.”
She placed a hand over her mouth so Will wouldn’t hear the choked cries of a very happy woman. But she couldn’t hold it back as she cried tears of joy. When she finally composed herself she found him in the kitchen making sandwiches. Like always he took her breath away as she watched him and when he finally turned she ran into his arms and he lifted her up, letting her legs wrap around his waist. She kissed him hard; the Post-It note tightly clutched in her hand and whispered she loved him too.
As Will clutched Emma to him as they lay on his bed, Emma eyed the picture of the two of them at the park taken by a stranger. It was a week after they professed their love for one another and the last week of summer. She smiled as she remembered the amazing day they had and closed her eyes, knowing good dreams would come. Will awoke the next morning to the smell of Emma’s peppermint shampoo. Smiling he turned to his nightstand to see her writing on a rosy colored piece of paper. He grabbed it and read it as he pulled the sheets off. “Early detention today. Lunch in the fridge. See you at lunch.”
Emma sat in the faculty lunch room waiting for Will. She had heard he had a rough morning and was hoping that he was in a good mood when she saw him. As much as she loved Will, he was moody when things were not going well. Rachel Berry entered, a hop in her step coming towards Emma. Emma was confused but let the young girl talk and talk she did. By the time she stopped talking Emma ate her whole lunch and realized she had to get back to her office. As she stood, Rachel handed her a folder of things that she said contained her Spanish test scores. Emma unsure why, took the folder from her and watched as she happily left the room.
By the time Emma reached her office she was thoroughly confused by Rachel’s documents. Rachel didn’t need to provide her with her Spanish test scores but at the same time it was Rachel. She sat at her desk and opened it up, curious as to what she would find. The second she opened the folder she was hit with five different colored Post It’s. She wasn’t sure which one to read first but she saw numbers one through five which told her the order.
The first one read, “Sorry about lunch.”
The second read, “I told Rachel to deliver this to you but you can totally ignore the scores.”
The third read, “Move in with me.”
The fourth read, “I know you might be nervous but you spend all your time at my place and I can totally be cleaner.”
The fifth read, “Love you.”
She closed the folder and smiled. He was trying to get more creative and she couldn’t fault him for that.
She scribbled a response to his comment and placed the Post-It right on top of the folder, hoping to deliver it while he was in Glee rehearsal.
Will entered his office, ready to pack up his things when he saw the Post-It on top of the manila folder. He smiled when he saw in big capital letters, “YES.”
The next two weeks Emma moved from her place to his and while it was tedious and time consuming she had done it and was officially on the lease with him. They celebrated by having wine and watching one of her favorite movies.
Before school each day after that, one would leave a note for the other, depending on who would leave first and if they were leaving at the same time, who ever got up first would leave a note bedside. Sometimes it would be a checklist, sometimes it would be a reminder to do something or sometimes it would be an apology or congratulations.
The day of the big Glee concert for the town, Will got up early and left a note for Emma. He was anxious and stressed and when Emma read the note, she could tell in his writing. Sometimes Emma felt silly for communicating by note but it was something that brought them close and was something that had been so ingrained in their relationship since the very beginning. She tucked the Post It away and headed to school knowing it was going to be a long but successful day.
Emma left his notes in his office all day hoping he would read them. By the time they got home and got changed, he kissed her quickly on the cheek and headed out the door again. Will was tired and nervous for tonight as he knew this was a big concert. He entered the auditorium and found the kids all ready to go which helped his stress level. As he watched them line up, he stuck his hand in one of his pockets to calm himself further and he fingered a piece of paper. Slowly he pulled it out and discovered it neatly folded. He walked to the corner backstage and unfolded it reading it slowly. “’’Don’t stop believing’.’ In your eyes I am complete’. ‘You're my wonderwall.’ Love you forever.” He put the Post-It in his sleeve, letting some of the paper exposed and walked confidently over to the kids who were waiting for his direction.
Two ovations and an hour of praise later by the mayor and Principal Figgins later, the two of them walked to her car. Will was going to celebrate with the kids and Emma was going to go home since she was feeling extra tired. He kissed her gently and closed the door for her as she slid in. The air was chilly as he watched her drive away and as she was out of sight he went back to celebrate with the kids.
Emma returned home tired and happy for Will. She planned on calling her mother but decided to do it another time since it was late. She removed her shoes and jacket and went into their bedroom to change. When she went to open her drawer for her pajama pants she discovered a piece of paper sitting on top. Smiling she put her pants on and then lifted the white paper sitting on the bed as she read. “You looked amazing tonight. I’m so lucky I found you.” She placed the note with the others and fell asleep under the warm covers, keeping his pillow close to her.
School was abuzz over winter break plans. With the holiday’s fast approaching Emma spent all her time making sure she could enjoy her vacation. Will himself was also trying to get things done. They decided to not go away but her parents were coming to visit and his parents wanted to meet hers so it was going to be a stressful day or so. She locked her office one last time officially ushering in winter break. She found him coming down the hall moments later and they locked hands as they walked to the parking lot to his car. He purchased a brand new SUV for his Christmas gift and even let her drive it sometimes.
They arrived back at the apartment and celebrated winter break with dancing in the living room and making a quick trip to the supermarket for junk food, all things that were not on the grocery list. They fell asleep on the couch to the strains of Guys and Dolls and when Emma awoke, sunlight was streaming in.
When the parents met a few days later it went well with them all getting along and finding out that his dad and her dad both liked show tunes which was rare. The mothers too compared notes and discovered that both their children were very happy together. As Emma pulled back the covers for bed and Will was in the living room finishing cleaning the living room, Emma found a piece of paper on her side, bright blue. Making sure that Will wasn’t come around the corner, she picked it up and read it, liking to always read them quietly. “I love your parents because I love you.”
With tears in her eyes she walked to the living room, finding him Swiffering the kitchen floor. Concerned he asked her what was wrong and when she nodded that everything was perfect he dropped the Swiffer handle and pulled her into a tight hug.
They spent their winter vacation indoors mostly due to the heavy snow. They celebrated Christmas together and both of them received what they wanted from each other. She spent a day shopping with her newfound gift cards and he spent the evenings on his new electronic piano singing to her and coming up with original songs for Glee club to sing. On the evening before they had to go back to school they went to bed early talking about the next half of the year. She fell asleep in his arms and told him not to ever leave.
The next morning he left a note saying he had to go in early to get a head start on Glee. She dragged herself out of bed and took her time showering and changing. The one thing Emma was not ready for was for more school. She enjoyed her vacation with Will too much to want to go back. It also made her realize that she was ready for a real future with him.
As she entered school she found a few students around and they were looking at her with smiles and wide eyes. She waved hello to them and slowly made her way to office trying to delay as much as possible. When she reached her office she saw a crowd form around it. Curious she saw kids looking into her office and it made her nervous. Something was going on and as she gently tried to push herself through it, she discovered a rainbow of colors inside.
Before she could catch her breath, a student commented to her. She didn’t hear them as she read the piece of paper posted on the handle, “Where I fell in love with you.” Breathless and shaking, the students make room for her and one opened the door for her. All around the office, in every color imaginable were words written on Post It’s. She found one right in front of her, in black marker on the back of the chair and she whispered, almost too overwhelmed to read it. “Where you inspired me.”
She looked up and found another posted to the front of the desk. It said, “I love the way you smile.”
Again she found another on the side of the file cabinet. “You are adorable.”
She kept going around the room; finding brightly colored Post-It’s and every comment would make her tear up even more.
Another said, “I love that you say drawer in that thick heavy accent.”
One more said, “Peppermint is my new favorite flavor. Why don’t they make the ice cream in summer?”
She found another hidden under a plant. “Paper towels are the best things ever made. Or maybe Wet Swiffers. I love the fact you are always prepared for any mess.”
She sensed more students had huddled around her office as she turned to the group triple as she read more notes, the tears flowing freely.
“Because of you, I now love U2 and will be using a song in the next Glee showcase.”
“You make the cutest face when you don’t like something.”
“I’m so proud of you for trying a roller coaster. You are stronger then you think.”
Another was written in big letters. “YOU ARE STUNNING IN BLUE.”
As she pulled out her chair she found a Post-It on the floor in front of her. She leaned down and picked it up. She laughed as she read it. “You have an amazing tongue.” And in smaller script at the bottom. “Didn’t want the kids to read that.”
She fingered each Post-It, collecting them and putting them on her desk. There were still a few more to read and when she got to the windows to pull them off, the kids were smiling with a few girls squealing and she thought she saw one with tears her eyes. One on bright blue said, “When I met you, I knew we would be friends forever.”
Another, “You make me a better person.”
As she pulled them off she could barely believe what was happening. It was like she was in a dream.
“You fight for what you believe in. You fight for what’s right.”
She found one more in the corner. “The Glee kids have named you the Glee mom. I like the sound of that.”
Still overwhelmed and completely floored she took the batch to her desk and kept looking around for more Post It’s. When she was pretty sure she got them all she heard a knock on the door. Gasping at the sound, she looked up to see Will, smiling and holding large sheets of paper. She went to open the door, wiping the tears away and he stood there, the crowd of students around him.
She waited to see what would happen next and that’s when she saw him pull out the sheets of paper and hold them in front of him. Without a word she looked down to see words written.
Like in one of her favorite movies, “Love Actually” he had written a small piece of dialogue. The first piece of paper said, “To Em, who makes me smile and laugh.” She nodded and he turned to the next one, “To Em, who loves me even when I’m moody.” She laughed and nodded letting him know to move on.
“I don’t know where I would be without you. I don’t know where Glee would be without you.”
She wiped her tears away so she could read the words as he moved on. “I’m so happy I don’t have to find out. Emma, will you….”
Emma with a gasp nodded and watched as the next piece of paper revealed what she hoped and wished for.
“MARRY ME?” The kids all let out gasps as she walked towards him, tears running down her cheeks, her heart beating fast and finally landing in his arms in a hug. She kissed him and heard the hollers and claps in the background. Through the haze of the crowd and noise she pulled out a piece of paper in her skirt pocket and lifted it up to him so he could read it.
He smiled and kissed her cheek as they hugged again. Once the crowd thinned out and were told to go to their home room, Will stayed back and wiped her tears away. Before he left however he asked how she knew.
She told him that she always kept the “Yes” post-it in her pocket, just in case. He laughed, kissed her quickly one last time before heading to class.
Emma took out the Post-It’s from the drawer, reading from the beginning and smiling. Green was going to be for the students, Orange was going to be for next day’s use, Yellow was going to be for her own personal use, Pink was going to be for Do List when she got home and Purple was going to be for wedding plans.
The End!
Hope you liked!
