Here via sionnain. This was just excellent, heartbreaking and true to character. I loved how he used Dumbledore's first name at the end.

WOOT!!!! HBP-inspired fic already!!! *does a happy twirl*

I'm so glad you picked this subject too. I've been considering the idea that, after HBP, the true hero of the series, in terms of the depth of sacrifice and change, is not Harry but Snape. And this scene only reinforces my convictions that Snape had made an Unbreakable Vow with Dumbledore to do this, as well as with Narcissa to reinspire confidence in his loyalty.

And you know, I've never really even liked Snape before this. But damn. What a brave man he is.

Oh, hope you don't mind, hon, but I found one quick fix that's anal but did jump out at me, so I thought I'd point it out:

His voice, usually composed to the point of contemptuous, is vulnerable, desperate.

I think that should be "contempt", since it's really a noun you're referring to, not an adjective. Like I said, it's anal. :P

*needs to get a good Snape icon now, but, in lieu of that, provides the long-suffering Mr. Darcy instead*

You know what's funny? I had contempt and then changed it. Thanks for that! I shouldn't second-guess. ;-)

Hee, further proof that you should trust your own instincts more often! ^_^

How are things, btw? Less busy, or still pretty chaotic? I'm impressed you found time to write a ficlet--I've got an evil bunny that won't go away for something (you guessed it) longer. But I'm waiting a week before posting anything, since a lot of people still haven't finished the book yet.

And... I still have drabbles from ten million years ago. *wishes upon a star for the ability to be just a tad more prolific on a consistent basis*

Even so, this really cheered me up! Thanks so much for posting it!!!

Followed the link on sionnain's LJ. I loved this fic. Wonderful. One of the best gen fics I've read in a long time. Wow.

That was excellent and amazingly powerful for its brevity. I felt very moved by it...and I was also surprised to find that I felt better after I read it. Though I always have and will continue to trust Snape, this was a much-needed reminder that he's earned that trust many times over. :)
