Melody No. 4 ~ Why the caged bird sings.

[Life from within a hospital room, after the freak accident involving Splendid and the hazy in-between from when she was found, helped, and eventually delivered to the town's clinic, is freakishly structured and monotonous in comparison, like clockwork. At first she is grateful for the reprieve, but the novelty wears off fast.

Probably a few weeks, if I had to guess.

Oh...well, I suppose that isn't so bad. [scratch scratch scratch] But...they won't keep me here in the hospital for that long, will they?

You might - it's best not to move too much with broken bones.

Course, I only know cause I've got some too...

Oh, I'm sorry. What happened to you?

It depends on where the break was, how severe it is, and how well it's being treated.

Well... [And there's a thoughtful pause, like she's trying to remember something exactly.] I was told that I broke my radius and ulna bones, and my ulna bone actually broke through my skin around my wrist. [...Goes back to trying to scratch inside of the cast.]

. . . I actually meant if it broke all the way or if it was just a crack and things like that. But it doesn't sound too bad. For a break, I mean. It shouldn't take much longer than one or two months. And as long as you've got a cast, you can still move around and stuff.

It could have been worse, and I'm very glad it wasn't. But two months?... [How she wishes she could simply Cure it. Naturally-healing wounds are not something she's used to dealing with.] Oh yes, I was surprised when I realized how easy it is to move with. The real problem is my ribs, but they don't hurt as much when I take pain relievers.

( have a young woman in one of those bright candystriper outfits in the doorway of garnet's room. she come by on her round to check up on a number of patients to make sure they're comfortable or in need of anything, basically grunt work. )

It usually depends on where the break and the severity of it, though four to six weeks is what I normally hear the doctors and nurses around here mention. ( smile. ) Sorry, I couldn't help overhearing.

[Garnet looks up from the phone she's cradling against her ear, slowly setting down the receiver now that she has company. A gentle smile curves her lips as she settles back down against the pillows propping her up. She is relieved to see that this woman isn't a drone.] Oh! No, don't apologize. In fact, thank you for telling me. Do you work here?

( she steps in a little, brushing her hands down the front of her uniform. )

Ah, well, you're welcome then. And yes, I do. I'm a Candystriper, we just sort of help out around with little tasks and the like.

Candystriper? [Looks amused by the unfamiliar term.] You're first employee of this hospital that I've met who isn't a drone. I was beginning to think this place was run completely by them.

A few weeks, I'm afraid! But the medical care here seems top-notch, so you'll be in good hands.

That's true. They've been very accommodating since I was admitted. Thank you, by the way.

Oh, not a problem! Did they give you a plaster cast? You should have people sign it!

[There's a pause on her end of the line, as if she's examining the cast, trying to picture it covered in signatures. How odd!] ...Is that a custom of this town?

[Guess who comes to see you everyday? Your worry wart of a not!mother.]

H..How are you feeling today? Are you going to be able to come back soon?

Ukraine! [The girl sits up in her bed a little straighter at the sight of her not!mother, flashing her a smile.] I'm much better - look. [And she wiggles the fingers sticking out of the bulbous cast on her arm, something she hadn't been able to do in days.] I wouldn't mind returning home today, honestly, but these drones insist I stay a little longer.

Oh that is wonderful! [So honestly happy for you]

Well...bones take a while to heal. How long to the drones want you to stay here?

They never give me a definite answer when I ask them... [There's a hint of annoyance in her tone; she greatly dislikes being treated like a child.] And I cannot leave unless one of my parents checks me out.
