Rewatch: 9x19 The Truth Part One (2/2)

What's Up With Mulder?: Shout-out to Zellie for helping get this train of thought started.

I do question the dramatic use of Mulder’s refusal to tell Scully the truth. It is simply NOT a strong enough reason to stonewall the trial.

However, since we’re given it, I’ll go with it. At first blush, it seems out of character. We’ve spent the last two ( Read more... )

Yay, I got a shout-out! \o/

Again, welcome to S9 (and, to a slightly lesser degree, S8). Anything to move the plot along, regardless of how illogical or out-of-character!

Day to day, his existence has been spare and obsessive. Even more extreme than his existence before meeting Scully, I would imagine. Sure, it’s not going to completely erase all of the progress he’s made emotionally over the past nine years. But he’s had nothing but time to think about everything that’s gone down, everything that’s gone wrong. Nothing but time to flagellate himself over the things that have happened to Scully, in particular, the life she’s leading with their son. Over the fact that he’s not there with his son. As Zellie always reminds me, the core of Mulder’s quest is family. It has to eat at him that he had to leave William and Scully. That he is unable to “fix,” in a relationship with William, the fucked-up ( ... )

Seriously, I'm so glad we had that conversation the other day, because it really got me thinking more deeply about what Mulder's going through, instead of just being all, "BOOOO. Tell her, dummy!"

That's not to undermine what Scully means to him -- I truly believe that Scully and Mulder are capable of moving on and being happy, even without their son -- but he needs to be reminded, as usual, that she'll still be around. He has a different responsibility to her than he does to his son, if that makes sense. It does make sense. But I can't come up with a way to phrase it that doesn't make Mulder look like a jerk! But he's not! It really is that his devotion to her is always tempered by a feeling that she'll leave or he'll lose her. UGH, I hate that I can't figure out a way to say it without making it sound like they don't really love each other ( ... )

Heh, always glad to help! ;)

I almost feel like the very existence of William, wherever he is, would bring some kind of comfort. Even though they can't be with him and raise him, it's almost like the very fact that this child they created, this physical manifestation of their love and union, is somewhere out there, would make things slightly bearable. Am I making any sense?
You are absolutely making sense, and I agree! I think you can probably include the existence of William into Mulder's last line, "Maybe there's hope." That line carries a lot of weighty connotation, actually, beyond the obvious.

It bothers me when people seem to think that it would tear them apart. I don't deny it's a difficult situation, but what I see in the relationship tells me that they're bound together forever and ever, no matter what, and they WANT to be.Yes, exactly. A lot of people who are still really, really pissed off about the whole adoption thing seem to love to take it out on Mulder and Scully, which drives me nuts and is projecting if I've never ( ... )

I don't quite understand that level of not being able to move on with the story, you know? Yeah, I think the adoption storyline is dubious, but come on, dudes. It is what it is. And I think you're totally right about the projecting. I just remember a few months back someone posted something about this in xfiles, and several people were like, oh, they definitely split up because they had to give up William. Um...how do you figure? Anyway, I feel like it's the same thing at work that gets people pissed off about Scully allegedly "being a victim." Which we've discussed.

OMFG yay. I totally rewatched the Pilot last night, as a refresher. Oh man. I can't wait to hear what you thought.Boo, I didn't get a chance to do it yesterday, because my sister got into town. Maaaaybe today. But I did manage to watch two more episodes last night before bed ( ... )
