Yay, your reviews are always happy occasions, and always a little bit surprising. David does seem bored here, now that you mention it. I think West was born about this time - (or was it during 'The End'?) He must have been pretty distracted. And I too love his handwriting. I always stop and zoom in on it. I also love when they go through the wall with a tank and then Scully gets her hands all over him. The fifth season is sort of a turning point for Scully, and you can feel it manifesting in all these late-season eps...

Thank you for making my "pause and zoom" habit not feel so strange. (I know I'm going to go nuts with it when I get the IWTB DVD. Seriously, I may spend hours pausing and zooming in their house. Sigh.)

SWAT action always gets me excited--those shields with the little windows in them! And I found myself rewatching the part where Scully burrows into his side over and over. I think it's one of those moments that seems almost impossible, like it's not going to be quite so good when you rewind and watch it again, but it is.

Yes, it's a nice grabby moment. With the X-Files I'm forever lamenting how they always go in for a close-up and you can't see what their hands are doing! And through the years the close-ups got worse and worse, closer and closer, until you felt like you were about to walk the surface of some forbidden planet.

Thank you for making my "pause and zoom" habit not feel so strange.

Um, I've been freeze-framing the X-Files since the mid-nineties; nope, you're not alone there. And I replay stuff over and over. And slow-mo. Pause and zoom is also my thing. I always do it on Mulder's apartment, trying to read the titles on his books.

Oh, yes, and don't you just love SWAT Team!Mulder & Scully in 'Tunguska'!

Re: the zoom... I think it was their not-so-subtle way of trying to hide as much of the atmosphere change (from Vancouver to L.A.) as they could. Sometimes I like it, other times not so much. I also think that often they hid their hands because of Gillian's very obvious nervous tic (which still got caught on camera enough to be noticeable), which often caused David to hold onto her hand off-frame to settle her down, lol. I always loved that.

Heh, just when I think I can't love you any more!

Kudos to the person who thought to tape up his fingers. Continuity!

I love that they remembered Mulder's poor hurt fingers! Of course that also makes me think about how Scully was shot in the gut in "Tithonus" and we never saw one second of continuity there, but I suppose I shouldn't nitpick since we're not in s6 yet. Heh.

1. I kind of can’t believe Carter let this fly. It’s one of the most blatantly romantic things that is ever said by either one of them. It makes my heart go pitter-pat.I know, me too! It's extremely romantic and sweet. Vince Gilligan was always able to slip a lot of shippiness into his episodes, bless him ( ... )

Yep, it's the same actor in Pusher and Folie a Deux! He's been in at least one other Vince episode too, I think. Love that guy!

It's crazy how the littlest instances of continuity make us so happy. I love his taped up fingers.

I KNOW. I love Vince. He somehow manages to do things that are romantic for Mulder and Scully. I mean, you're usually not going to get a romantic scene when one of the characters is restrained in a hospital bed, but he totally makes it work.

I don't know if this was their intention, but this is how I justify it to myself: Fellig essentially took her place, right? He looked at Death instead of her, and he died when she should've. When Mulder visits Scully in the hospital at the end of the episode, he tells her that the doctors say she's making "the fastest recovery they've ever seen". So... maybe she healed super quickly because Fellig took her place, died instead of her? And in doing so he somehow... took away the full impact of the injury (which would've otherwise potentially killed her)?

It makes sense if you don't think about it too hard, lol.

Because he’s the dad, that’s why, Mulder. Do you think there are any other agents who whine like this?
LOLLL. And we're off and running! (I missed these, as I'm sure you could have guessed! Particularly since I'm apparently incapable of posting anything of substance lately.)

So listen. You guys know my feelings on Mulder. I love him. Probably a little too much. But DAMN is he being a jackass here. I have to believe it’s due to resentment because he’s just been completely used by the Bureau during the PBV undercover fiasco. Still, it's quite unbecoming.I guess it's never bothered me before; that is, I love Folie a Deux and thereby rewatch it often, and this has never bugged me. Maybe because of the PBV angle, like you suggest, but really... I can buy Mulder being tired and pissed off. I'm not sure why it's easier to buy that from Scully so much more often for people, but... does he usually take pride in being Monster Boy? Yeah. But haven't you ever had crappy days where you hate everything? Heh, I guess I just get that vibe here. Plus ( ... )

So why IS Mulder able to see through Pincus to the monster within? Just because he’s a paranormally sensitive magic man?
I think it's all about sensitivity, open-mindedness. That's the suggestion we're left with anyway, since it's only once Scully really starts to entertain the possibility that Mulder's theory might be real, that she notices the "zombie" nurse.

She’s so handsy and I love it! So unprofessional!
I know! Oh, them. And their total lack of the concept of personal space.

Okay, that little cut on his lip? I’m not gonna lie, I spent the whole episode wanting to kiss it and make it all better.
Mmm, me too. It's highly distracting.

Skinner, he never has, does, or will, okay? Love him, love his lack of internal censor.
LOL. Oh, Mulder. Maybe that's why I love him so... I don't have much of one, either.

I don’t think Mulder does care about his career. On one hand, there’s something noble about that. He’ll never be the mindless drone that Gary Lambert warned of. But on the other hand, come on, guy. Despite what you may think ( ... )

And here, it's not just a little hand touch! She just stands there, holding on to him! Completely in public, while they're working, without looking awkward at all. And she's the one who initiates it!

I've always been of the school of thought that Mulder is very likely a trust fund baby (or the equivalent of it; take into account the amount of property his parents both had, and the quality and locations of it, and it's millions of dollars we're talking here), so I can totally buy him not caring when he gets disenchanted like this.See, I've never quite been able to get on board with that because it just seems like an easy way for writers to do whatever they want without worrying about a pesky little thing like money. Of course, it does seem possible, but there's part of me that just wants to resist the fanon there. Also, (hey, more weird personal things!) I tend to get really irked by people who have never had to contemplate NOT having money, who have that freedom ( ... )

Talk about a bold move there, Scully! I'm not sure how I never realized she was holding onto him that whole time, I'll have to pay more attention next time ( ... )

This was the first episode I saw. And, as you know, I'm currently slogging through S9 (finale tonight, sadface), so reading this and looking at the caps makes me want to go back and watch good eps again SO BAD. Soon, self, soon.

This was great, thanks for sharing!

Aw, yay! You got in just in time for FTF!

NO! Happyface! You're almost done! And Mulder's in "The Truth," so despite having to sit through the world's most pointless recap, you get to stare at Mulder! In his orange jumpsuit! Kissing!

Actually, no, FTF was technically my first X-Files experience. I saw it in what we used to call a "dollar theater" (showing movies a couple months old for a buck or two) in August '98 on a rainy day during a family vacation at the beach without having ever seen a single episode of the series. (!) I was instantly obsessed, and as soon as we got back from the beach, I looked it up in the TV Guide and taped the first rerun I could get my hands on... which happened to be Folie a Deux. ♥

Awesome! But you're lucky the first rerun that you found was this and not, like, Space.

"I actually kind of like how the “bug” is sort of static-y and superimposed like video against the real world. There’s something about it that could look kind of tacky in a “Sci Fi Original” sort of way, but it works for me aesthetically. (Then again, I’m a sucker for effects that aren’t slick and clearly CG.) But it also seems that any hallucination would be a product of its time and place, and how else would someone in modern America reference a monster but through television and movies?"

Allow me to be candid. *Clears throat* I had a psychotic episode years back: a few delusions, more so auditory and visual hallucinations. The visual hallucinations were of animals, mostly insects. And this XF episode nailed it. It was EXACTLY like that, sketchy and jumpy like bad videotape. Scary to watch, actually.

OK, end madness. :)
