Oh my God, the Doctor and Fox Mulder should go get a drink.
I would pay SO MUCH to see that. So much.
Oooh, I do love this episode. The visuals are stunning, like you mentioned, and I think this is my favorite music in all Doctor Who (and there are some impressive scores in the new series). The visuals and music just worked together so well in the shot where the ceiling is opened-- one of my favorite things ever.
And the Doctor and Rose are just too adorable with the awkward mortgage talk. I totally want to rewatch this now.
Thanks for pointing out the parallels in Rose and Donna reacting to the Ood. I'd missed that.
I would pay SO MUCH to see that. So much. I KNOW! I can't think about it that much, because it'll make me sad that we'll never get to see that. When I first started watching, I was like, I bet Mulder totally wishes he could be the Doctor's companion. They'd go around, licking things in the name of scientific inquiry and getting emo about the pain they've caused other people and admiring their hair. It'd be great!
The awkward mortgage talk makes me so happy! I love how she sing-songs, and how they're both doing cartoon shifty-eyes, and how everything ends up okay. Until the devil calls.

I WANT THIS TO HAPPEN!
Actually, I have just remembered that I picked up a 'tell the BBC your opinions about their television' form at the library the other day. Originally I was just going to use it to complain about how crap, boring and misogynist 'Top Gear' is and that they deserve a prize for making 'Merlin' more gay than 'Torchwood' (and that it should keep being made forever), but now I will use it to put forward this excellent programming suggestion! I mean, exactly what proportion of the UK population wouldn't tune in to watch Davids Tennant and Duchovny being hot and angsty In Space?
This would clearly be the best suggestion they received. And hey, I'm looking for a job--they could hire me for a VERY reasonable price!

This post reminded me that I never got around to reading your XF recaps from, like, August 2008 onwards. OOPS. But I'm going to read this one FOR SURE!
Maybe I should make the XF ones an item on my vacation to-do list...
I had to go back and rewatch the episode after reading this. I think 'The Impossible Planet' is my favourite episode of New Who (although I'm not too fond of 'The Satan Pit'), if for no other reason than how it felt to watch it the first time. I was genuinely creeped out- there's something almost Lovecraftian about the eerie setting, the strange voices, hearing unnatural sounds from a machine, the sense of building dread... brr.
I love how the Doctor and Rose are at this point in the series too, though in retrospect it's also so sad- they're just so absurdly happy to be together that nothing seems like it could be that bad. The conversation about getting a mortgage is so dorky and adorable (first time round my dad and I both went 'aww' at the same time).
Oh, this is definitely my favorite. I love those creepy things you mentioned, and the fact that the Doctor and Rose are so giddy at the beginning, blithely traipsing into this horrible situation, makes it even worse.

Oh, I know! Just enjoying traveling, no matter what, and enjoying each other, almost always on the same page. But the series are so short, to my American brain, that I find myself feeling bittersweet even as I'm watching something as early as, say, "Tooth & Claw," because I know bad things are coming all too soon.
The mortgage conversation kills me. They're huge nerds, which I love. And it's also one of those conversations that's so layered and jam-packed that I can always find something new when I watch it.
Also, for your possible future reference, I'd say the closest British equivalent to 'Nova' would be 'Horizon' (which coincidentally had a rather good programme on black holes last night).
