Well, as far as manga goes, I love Chobits and Cardcaptor Sakura by Clamp. Chobits is a little more mature, but just for something sweet and lovely - Cardcaptor Sakura was my first love and it's awesome!
My affections in anime are just as limited lulz. I love anything by Studio Ghibli and of their films would highly HIGHLY recommend: Spirited Away, Kiki's Delivery Service, The Girl Who Leapt Through Time, My Neighbour Totoro, Howl's Moving Castle, Grave of the Fireflies, The Cat Returns and Whisper of the Heart.
Those are just like, my top favourites that I would absolutely recommend to anyone at the drop of a hat, but all their stuff is super!
If you just want a taster book which has lots of different, lovely manga "short stories" I would suggest this wonderful book that I studied last semester. It has some truly gorgeous art and cute stories (including some slashy stuff ;) which is just my thing
( ... )
I have an inkling you might enjoy the mangas: Peach Girl, Fruits Basket, Hot Gimmik, and Othello. They are pretty decent reads and each has its own distinct flare.
As far as anime series, that's really more my bf's field but we watch[ed]: Big O, FLCL (will fuck with your head, promise), Ghost in the Shell (good stuff), Inuyasha, and Fruits Basket (college friends actually had me watch all of this).
The movies your other friend suggested are all very good (at least the ones I've seen). =)
Heh, it has been a LONG TIME since I actively followed any anime or manga, but there are two anime series that you absolutely must watch from start to finish if you get a chance: Trigun, and Cowboy Bebop.
That being said, are there any specific types of story/genre/etc. that you're especially interested? Comedy or serious, sci-fi or fantasy, etc.? There's just so much out there that I think I'll be a lot more help to you with a narrower target. ^_^

Spike is the shit.
Also, another decent manga is Paradise Kiss. If you have even the slightest interest in fashion and drama, it's great.
