Hm . . . ? Why would I not be? He failed in his duty. Though it does not happen often, we are fully prepared to depart when it is our time.

Correct. Our purpose was to actuate the Retribution. We would have likely perished, regardless, if we succeeded -- I take my current existence to indicate I have either failed or am yet in the process of achieving my goal.

. . . Friend? It depends on your definition. He was a teammate, a companion -- If that is all it takes to constitute a friend, then yes. Otherwise. Doubtful.
