It was mid morning and Alice was lying in bed. Usually at this time she’d be at school, however the last few days she’d been home, sick and it didn’t seem as though she were going to be getting better any time soon.

Alice hated getting sick, the feeling itself was annoying to be sure. But what she really didn’t like was having to spend all day doing nothing.

“I could be at school.” Alice spoke to Dinah, after coughing a moment. “Or talking to friends.”

Dinah gave a meow at this and Alice nodded as though the cat had replied. “I know it’s just so that I can get better Dinah. It’s just so boring....” She trailed off as another wave of nausea passed over her.  “And....annoying.” Leaning back on her pillow she waited for the moment to pass.

As it did she tried to think of something to occupy her time. She’d listen to music if her walkman was working, unfortunately at the moment it didn’t seem to be working. Alice had suspicions that her brother had something to do with this.  As it was she really didn’t have anything to do.

“Alice?” There was a knock on the door and her mother stuck her head in. “How are you feeling dear?”

“Alright.” Alice replied with a small smile. “Could be better.”

“Is there anything I can get you before I go to my book club meeting?”

Alice shook her head. “I’m fine-“ She trailed off as she started to cough.

“I’ll get some more cough drops then. Call me if you need anything.”

Alice just nodded as her mother left the room. She took another sip of water before leaning back on her pillow.  It was going to be a long day.

Twenty minutes later Alice was still laying in her bed with nothing to do. She had just about given up and was attempting to get to sleep. However even this seemed to evade her as she just couldn’t get past the pain in her throat and the nausea.

At that thought, as though ushered in, Alice got up quickly and went to the bathroom.

A few moments later she was rinsing out her mouth and shakily trying to steady herself. As she looked at herself in the mirror she realized just how pale she was. With that and the dark circles under her eyes she looked like she’d decided to dress up as a zombie for Halloween. Sighing, she coughed a few more times and then made her way back to her room.

Her stomach had settled slightly, after that and Alice was determined to enjoy the slight break she had in the nausea. ...Most likely by sitting in bed and attempting to get to sleep.

As she walked in the door though she realized that there was something out of place in it.

“Mr. Hatter?” She questioned as she walked back over to her bed. “What are you doing here?”

The hatted man was standing in front of her mirror. “You haven’t been to Wonderland for a while.” He replied. “Her majesty asked me to check up on you.” He looked at Alice. “Alice you look like a ghost!” In a moment he was standing next to her bed. “Alice did you die and not tell us, because that would be very rude.”

Alice chuckled and then coughed. “Mr. Hatter...I’m not dead...I’ve just been sick for the last few days.”

“Well that doesn’t sound much better.” The Mad Hatter replied and Alice smiled.

“It’s not a lot of fun.” She agreed, thinking back to the last few days. “It’s kinda boring. I wish I was in Wonderland with you guys.”

“Well...” The Hatter shook his head. “I guess this is the only way you’re going to get better though.”

“I know.” Alice sighed, leaning back. “It’s just so boring.”

“Why don’t you read a book?”

“I can’t.” Alice shook her head with a grimace, remembering when she had first tried that. “It just made me dizzy.”

The Hatter seemed thought full for a moment. Then held up a finger. “I have an idea!” In a moment he had walked back into the looking glass. Alice waited for a moment but it didn’t seem as though he was coming back.

About ten minutes later Alice was just starting to attempt to get to sleep again when the Mad Hatter came through the mirror again.

“I knew I had it around there somewhere.” He stated, more to himself as he walked over to Alice’s bed. “What were you looking for?” Alice asked.

“This book.” The Hatter held up a small book as he pulled a chair over. “My mother read it to me whenever I was sick.”

“What’s it called?”

“The Hunting of the Snark. By Lewis Carroll”

Alice looked interested. “Really? I’ve never heard of him.”

“You’ll like it.” The Hatter nodded and then opened the book. “’Just the place for a snark’ the bellman-”

Alice settled into her pile of pillows as the Hatter continued reading. Being sick was never fun but at least this time she had something to keep her mind off of it.
