Defensive
“What do you think you're doing?” The girl named Leslie said bitterly as she turned on the person who had just dared to interfere in her fun.
Alice almost backed up from the sheer ferocity of the glare that Leslie was sending her way. It was only the fact that she'd never backed down before that gave her the strength to face her opposer bravely.
“Leave her alone.” She said in a voice that she hoped didn't show how nervous she really was.
“What? What did you say to me?” Leslie shook her head in such amazement as though discovering that a rock had decided to speak and was singing show tunes.
“Leave her alone.” Alice repeated feeling her confidence dropping by the second. The rest of the group seemed to be congregating around them like vultures waiting for someone to drop dead. “She didn't do anything.”
Leslie threw back her head and laughed, giving Alice the impression that Leslie had been watching too many movies. However it had it's desired affect and it wasn't long before other kids were laughing at Alice as well. Alice used this chance to go over and help up Becky. Becky (or Rebecca) was one of Alice's quietest friends, extremely shy and timid. Over the past few months though she had seemed to be being picked on a lot by some of the other kids at school. The made fun of her being shy and her accent (she was from England) as well as other things.
Today the gang led by Leslie, had gone another step up in their abuses and it had been the last straw for Alice. She'd been walking with Becky when a group of kids came over mocking her. The next thing she knew one of the boys had pushed Becky from behind, causing the girl to fall hard on the ground. That was when Leslie had walked over and Alice had decided that enough was enough.
Helping Becky up Alice tried to be brave. She'd never been very shy but even a really outgoing person would have felt intimidating with a circle of mocking people surrounding them. Once the two girls were back off the ground Becky whispered a quick thanks and Alice nodded. She knew they weren't out of it yet.
“I asked you a question Alice.” Leslie said sternly as the laughter stilled. “What are you doing? Why are you helping that girl?”
“She's my friend.” Alice replied simply as Becky held on to her arm nervously.
“Then what am I?” Leslie asked forcefully. “We've been best friends since we were five. You're going to throw our friendship away for a stupid army brat?”
Alice's lips tightened well aware of the audience they had. “She's my friend too Leslie--”
“No” The girl snapped. “Let me get this clear. Either you're with me or her. It's your decision.” She folded her arms, stonily looking at Alice.
Becky looked over at Alice. “You don't have to....” But she trailed off as Alice shook her head.
“Fine Leslie, then I guess we're not friends.”
“I guess not.” Was Leslie's reply before she turned to the group behind her. “Come on guys, let's leave the brat and the freak alone.”
With a few chuckles the mob left and Alice was left with Becky.
“Oh Alice, I'm so sorry.” The girl said with tears in her eyes. “They'll hate you too now.”
Alice however shook her head again. “It doesn't matter Becky, really. What happened happened. I think Leslie and I stopped being friends a long time ago. This was going to happen some day. Now come on, come to over to my house and we can clean up the cut you got.”
Becky nodded softly and the two of them set off towards Alice's house.
At that moment though Alice really had no idea of what she was getting into from that one simple act.
